21.1【精讲课】第5章 回到柜门这边（1）

本部分为《纳尼亚传奇》第5章第1部分。在前四章的内容里已经讲到四个孩子来到乡下，Lucy第一次从衣柜进入了一个国度，大家不相信他，后来Edmund无意中也去了一趟纳尼亚。现在两个孩子都回到了衣柜门这边，哥哥姐姐们是否会相信他们了呢？

CHAPTER 5

BACK ON THIS SIDE OF THE DOOR（1）

第5章 回到柜门这边（1）

    BECAUSE the game of hide-and-seek was still going on, it took Edmund and Lucy some time to find the others. But when at last they were all together (which happened in the long room, where the suit of armour was) Lucy burst out（大声喊叫）:  

    "Peter! Susan! It's all true. Edmund has seen it too. Thereis a country you can get to through the wardrobe. Edmund and I both got in. We met one another in there, in the wood. Go on, Edmund; tell them all about it."

     "What's all this about, Ed?" said Peter.  

    And now we come to one of the nastiest things in this story. Up to that moment Edmund had been feeling sick, and sulky(闷闷不乐的), and annoyed with Lucy for being right, but he hadn't made up his mind(决定……) what to do. When Peter suddenly asked him the question he decided all at once(突然) to do the meanest and most spiteful thing he could think of. He decided to let Lucy down(让某某人下不了台/难堪).  

    "Tell us, Ed," said Susan.  

    And Edmund gave a very superior look as if he were far older than Lucy (there was really only a year's difference) and then a little snigger(窃笑) and said, "Oh, yes, Lucy and I have been playing - pretending that all her story about a country in the wardrobe is true. just for fun, of course. There's nothing there really."

    Poor Lucy gave Edmund one look and rushed out of the room.  

Edmund, who was becoming a nastier person every minute, thought that he had scored a great success（取得辉煌的成绩）, and went on at once to say, "There she goes again. What's the matter with her? That's the worst of young kids, they always ---"  

    "Look here," said Peter, turning on him savagely(恶狠狠地；野蛮地), "shut up(闭嘴）! You've been perfectly beastly(恶毒的)  to Lu ever since she started this nonsense(胡说八道) about the wardrobe, and now you go playing games with her about it and setting her off(引起某人某种情绪） again. I believe you did it simply out of spite."  

    "But it's all nonsense," said Edmund, very taken aback.

    "Of course it's all nonsense," said Peter, "that's just the point. Lu was perfectly all right when we left home, but since we've been down here she seems to be either going queer in the head or else turning into a most frightful(令人讨厌的) liar. But whichever it is, what good do you think you'll do by jeering(嘲笑) and nagging(指责) at her one day and encouraging(怂恿) her the next?"
