'GoT' prequel series coming
After two years of developing ideas, the first "Game of Thrones" prequel series is officially happening. HBO announced that it's "given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order" for "House of the Dragon" - a Targaryen-centric prequel set about 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones."
The new show's cocreators are George R R Martin, author of "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the latest Westeros-based novel "Fire and Blood," and Ryan Condal. Condal will serve as showrunner of "House of the Dragon", along with side Miguel Sapochnik - the famed "Game of Thrones" director who helmed "Hardhome," "Battle of the Bastards," and "The Winds of Winter" (three of the original show's most beloved episodes).
The news comes on the same day that outlets including Deadline and Entertainment Weekly reported that the first "Game of Thrones" prequel idea, set around the Long Night, was no longer moving forward.
Is renting clothes greener?
Is renting fashion actually more environmentally friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline delved into this question in a feature article for Elle, and she concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems.
Take shipping for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented – receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest footprint of our collective fashion habit, after manufacturing. Then there's the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it's returned, regardless of whether it was worn.
For most rental services, this usually means dry-cleaning, a high-impact and polluting process. Last, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible.
China launches 6G R&D
China has established two offices to develop 6G, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology on Wednesday, kicking off the competition for the next-generation cellular data service that comes after the super-fast 5G.
The ministry said on its website that one of the offices consists of government agencies responsible for any related policymaking. The other is composed of 37 experts from colleges, research academies and enterprises, who are expected to advise policymakers, it said.
Vice-Minister of Science and Technology Wang Xi said worldwide knowledge about the technology is still in an exploratory stage, without consensus over its definitions and applications. He said the ministry will work with related departments to roll out a plan for 6G development, and work toward breakthroughs regarding its basic theories, key technologies and standards.
Painful vaccinations to end
The end of painful vaccination jabs is on the horizon after scientists proved that a skin patch is just as effective as inoculating patients. The painless plaster, which contains tiny microscopic needles, could significantly improve the annual participation for vaccinations.
The patch is just as effective as generating immunity for 12 months. And the patch is cheaper and can be applied at home in just a few minutes. The results of the first human trial of the patch showed that there were no serious side effects with the patch, and local skin reactions only lasted two to three days.
After vaccination, imaging of the used patches found that the micro needles had dissolved in the skin, suggesting that the used patches could be safely discarded without the need for specialist waste disposal for needles. More than 70% of patch recipients said they would prefer the patch vaccination over injection. Researchers are now moving to phase II trials, and if successful, the patch could be available in just a few years.
