对比：a lot of letters或者a great number of letters

夸张的表象之下，都有更深层面的内涵。

扩展：

I’m hungry或者I’m starving. —> I’m so hungry that I could eat a horse.

I’ve got a lot of homework. —> I’ve got a ton of homework.

一吨的功课，幽默地体现了你抱怨的小情绪。

2) more than anything: 胜于其他任何事物

比其他任何事物都更能体现哈尔这人的年轻幼稚。

思考：为什么能够通过比较级more than表现出了最高级的含义？

答案：more than与anything的搭配，促成了逻辑上最高级的含义。

例句：Your efforts, more than anything, decide whether you will succeed in the end.

你的努力付出，比其他任何事物都更能决定最后你是否能成功 = 你的努力付出，从根本上决定了最后你是否能成功。

I love you more than anything. 我爱你胜过其他一切任何事物（我最最爱你。）

3. They needed twice as many dogs and half as much luggage．

倍数表达法

亚洲的面积是欧洲的四倍。

1）借助形容词副词原级：倍数＋原级比较

Asia is 4 times as large as Europe.

2）借助形容词副词的比较级：倍数＋比较级

Asia is 4 times larger than Europe.

注意：这种表达很多人会因为字面想当然，造成理解上的误区，错误理解成“亚洲比欧洲大四倍”。其实，这里不是大四倍，就是四倍的意思，或者理解为“大三倍”。

3）借助名词：倍数＋名词

Asia is 4 times the size of Europe.

4. On some days they travelled twenty kilometres and on some days only ten. 

“缺省”的修辞手法：前后文中内容相同的表达去掉，以求文字经济、言简意赅的效果。

对比完整版本：On some days they travelled twenty kilometres and on some days (they) only (travelled) ten (kilometres).

分析：Less is more. 少就是多。

You know you've achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away.

一件完美的设计，不是因为它没有更多的东西可以加上去，而是因为没有多余的部分可以被剔除。

答案：括号内为缺省内容。

thin ice：由于春季天气回暖，冰层部分融化，河面穿行已经不再安全。

thin ice的引申义：指“如履薄冰”一样的险境

例句：

1）Stop talking. You are walking on thin ice! You are close to pissing your boss off. 

别说了，你真是如履薄冰啊，再说下去的话，你可要惹毛你的老板了。

2）He has been skating on thin ice for years, but he got away with it. 

他已经铤而走险很多年，不过他总是化险为夷。
