After Paul the Octopus hogged the limelight by correctly predicting Spain as the winners of the FIFA World Cup 2010, Achilles, the resident white cat of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, is all set to begin his work as Russia's highly gifted but deaf official soothsayer for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia, which kicks off Thursday.

Achilles will attempt to predict the winners by choosing between two bowls of food, each adorned with the flag of the competing nation. For the World Cup, Achilles will move to the "Cat Republic" café nearby to receive intense training in "intuition skills" and have more opportunities to meet guests.

Chinese rice grows in Dubai

In a vast desert on the outskirts of Dubai, Chinese scientists looked across a field of "drought resistant" rice they had planted in sand and diluted seawater and realized that a four-decade struggle had come to an end.

Scientists at the Sea-Rice Research and Development Centre in Qingdao, eastern China, produced more than 7.5 metric tons per hectare of one strain of salt-resistant rice, which was planted in the dusty emirate in January.

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, both senior advisers to US President Donald Trump, disclosed new details of their vast wealth on Monday, reporting a long of list of real estate, fashion and investment assets. 

美国总统特朗普的高级顾问贾里德•库什纳和伊万卡•特朗普11日公布了他们拥有的巨额财富的新明细，列出了一份包含房产、时尚和投资资产在内的长长的资产清单。

Kushner, president Trump's son-in-law, reported assets of at least $174 million at the end of 2017, according to a person familiar with the couple's financial disclosure documents. His holdings could reach more than $710 million.

Ivanka, president Trump's daughter, earned at least $82 million in income in 2017, according to the documents. Kushner's filing reported many of the same income sources and amounts. The documents also list the couple's 2017 liabilities - a dozen loans and credit lines in amounts ranging from $1 million to $5 million or $5 million to $25 million.

Why can't people stop lying?

By the age of 3 or 4, we all start to lie. Lying is "bad", but we all have to lie sometimes. But some people are pathological liars, meaning they can't stop spreading misinformation about themselves and others.

The psychological reasons for why some people are this way is a bit of a mystery, but according to the third edition of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders", pathological lying is a disorder in its own right, as well as a symptom of personality disorders like psychopathy and narcissism. 

这种行为的心理学原因有点神秘莫测，但根据第三版《精神疾病诊断与统计手册》，病理性说谎不仅与心理变态和自恋一样，同为人格障碍的症状，其本身也是一种病。

Psychiatrist Judith Orloff said pathological liars have empathy deficient disorder, meaning they lack empathy, which essentially means a lack of conscience. They prefer to tell lies and gain control over people.
