Depend on Ourselves
Little Snail asked her mother, “Why do we bear this hard and heavy shell as soon as we were born?”
Mother said, “Because our bodies don’t have bones to support. We have to climb, yet not so fast, hence we need this shell for protection!”
Little Snail said, “Sister Caterpillar has no bones and doesn’t climb fast, why doesn’t she bear this hard and heavy shell?”
Mother said, “Because she can turn into a butterfly, and the sky will protect her.”
Little Snail said, “But Brother Earthworm has no bones and doesn’t climb fast. He won’t become a butterfly either. Why doesn’t he bear the hard and heavy shell?”
Mother replied, “Because he can dig into the earth, and the earth will protect him.”
Little Snail cried, “We are so poor that neither the sky nor the earth will protect us.”
Mother comforted her, “So we have the shells! We neither rely on the sky nor the earth, but rely on ourselves!”
