My associations, my more meaningful associations with Russia, having never been there, would be writers. But how did you use that as a cover for a spy network? You know, it’s the 19th century Russian literature, it’s my sort of, you know, that’s my only rear window into Russia as a country.

Interviewer: What’s your favorite author?

Well, I have huge passion of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I read everything. And Tolstoy, and Gogol, and Pushkin. So it’s generally that kind of 19th century thing, which captivated me in my 20’s.

And I’ve just actually been having a re-read of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. And I think you should read them in middle age. It’s wasted on just reading the new.

Interviewer: Speaking of stereotypes. In Russia, you are so loved, you are one of the most famous British actors. Russians love you. And you represent this stereotype of an English gentleman. Russians think that English gentlemen are handsome; they are polite; they’ve got good manners etc. So everything you are…

You only see my best behavior.

Interviewer: Well, that’s what I want to know about you. Are you always like that?

-No, I’m not always like that.

Interviewer: So, for example, are you really one of those English posh people who eat porridge for breakfast and have five o’clock tea?

-No.

Interviewer: Because that’s what Russians think about English gentlemen.

No, I mean I’ve had porridge for breakfast. I have had tea a lot in my life, and sometimes it’s been five o’clock. But no, I‘m not, I’m not posh. I know how I sound, but no, I was state-educated. I didn’t go forward with family money or titles or anything like that.

So it’s probably all rather bogus. I mean, you know, my parents both sound a little bit like they work for the BBC, but that’s from education rather than, you know, hereditary. They were not nobility or anything like that.

And then I got in public and I’ve been reasonably well brought up. So I try to pay politely with less as far as it goes.

Interviewer: -Thank you so mush.

-Thank you.

Interviewer:-My pleasure.
