P34-2 Marx and Durkheim have clear views of the body as a physical entity on which social structures or cultural symbols are inscribed, while Simmel con centrates on how forms become located within the emotional interactions and experiences of individuals. Nevertheless, each theorist is acutely aware of how the creations of embodied subjects become emergent phenomena which can sometimes dominate people’s subsequent actions, and traces how the societal environment locates itself on the flesh and blood lives of its inhabitants. Thus, each of them is concerned not just with how the body is a source of society, but with how its fundamental characteristics make it receptive to and constrained by society. The body, in other words, is a prime location for social structures.
