Aquarium enthusiasts in China were left shocked when they discovered that a much-hyped whale shark on display was, in reality, a robot.

The Xiaomeisha Sea World in Shenzhen reopened its doors after being shut for five years for renovations. But, much to visitors' disappointment, the majestic shark swirling around turned out to be a manmade imitation.

The Sea World defended itself saying it was adhering to Chinese laws that ban the trade of whale sharks.
