Chapter 11

    Max quickly passed through the mirror realm. He jumped out of the other mirror. He looked around, and a big sign leapt into his eyes:“Temple of Terror.”An eerie red light covered the place. The mist was thick as pea soup. A giant Buddha statue sat in the middle of the room. Max saw a tall door on the left, and a short one on the right. He saw new words appear on the map:“Take the short door and turn right after you get in.”

Max went through the short door. He turned right. The mist was getting thicker. He saw a poem written on the wall, and read it out:

“This is the place,

The place where you die!

We have tricks and traps.

Give it a try!

You should be frightened.

The evil spirits are near.

Say hi to our Buddhas.

Our guardians dear!”

    All of a sudden, Max heard a rumbling sound, which echoed against the empty halls. He trembled. He made a reflective shield with his weapons. The rumbling sound got closer and closer. There! Max saw them. A dozen of grinning gold Buddhas staggered towards him slowly. Max thought: Attack! Instantly a red beam and a blue one combined into a purple one and hit a Buddha in the face. The Buddha’s wicked grin grew broader. He reached out his hand and grabbed the beam! The beam turned gold. The Buddha swiped the beam at Max’s shield. CRACK! Max stared, wide eyed, as the shield broke in half and splattered on the ground. The Buddha swung the beam again. Max ducked and held the golden staff out to protect himself. KAPOW! Max saw the Buddha stagger back, and the beam broke in two. Max attacked the Buddha. CLANG! He sent the Buddha flying in the air, and its head was crushed. Max realized that he could use not only magic, but the weapons themselves to attack the monsters. He had a plan. He thought: Combine the weapons! The weapons flew out of his hand. A white beam shot out of the end of his axe. The two weapons were connected. Holding the beam, Max started to fight the Buddhas and smashed them to pieces. He found that the axe caused more damage than the golden staff, and it could easily slice anything into two pieces! In the end, Max killed all the Buddhas with his super-weapon.

    Max cheered with glee. But, suddenly, he heard another rumbling sound. It was much bigger. He turned just to see the giant Buddha statue he had seen earlier coming for him, its arms out-stretched. Max tossed the super-weapon at the giant Buddha. It hit the Buddha on the head. But the Buddha did not get sliced into two pieces by the axe, or smashed to bits by the golden staff. It picked up the super-weapon and hit hard at Max. Max thought: Come to me! The superweapon flew out of the Buddha’s hand and into Max’s. Max shot a green beam at the Buddha. Surprisingly, this one penetrated it easily, and it slumped lifelessly to the ground.

   Max cheered again. He saw words appear on the map:“You have defeated the Buddhas. You must make a mirror portal. Then you will get to the cell. That’s where your father is being held prisoner. Good luck!”

    Max did not hesitate. He had been longing to see his father for many years, and now, he would see him! So Max thought: Make a mirror portal! A mirror appeared before Max’s eyes. He jumped in and sped towards the cell.
