传统地铁车辆主要采用钢、铝合金等金属材料，受制于材料特性，面临减重瓶颈。碳纤维因具有轻质、高强度、抗疲劳、耐腐蚀等优点，被称为“新材料之王”，它的强度是钢铁的5倍以上，但重量不到钢铁的1/4，是轨道车辆轻量化的绝佳材料。

该车的车体、转向架构架等主承载结构采用碳纤维复合材料制造，实现了车辆性能的全新升级，具有更轻更节能、强度更高、环境适应力更强、全寿命周期运维成本更低等技术优势。与传统金属材料的地铁车辆相比，该碳纤维地铁车辆的车体减重25%，转向架构架减重50%，整车减重约11%，运行能耗降低7%，每列车每年可减少二氧化碳排放约130吨，相当于植树造林101亩。

目前，该碳纤维地铁列车已完成厂内型式试验。按照计划，年内将在青岛地铁1号线投入载客示范运营。
