Where is the Heart of the Donkey? 驴心哪儿去了？
One day the lion king became sick.

一天，狮王生病了。

He summoned the doctor to treat him.

他叫医生来治疗他。

“Your majesty,” the doctor said,
“you will get well if you eat the heart of a donkey,
but make sure you take a bath first.”

医生说：“陛下，你吃了驴的心脏，就会痊愈的，但吃之前要先洗个澡。”

The lion king was pleased to hear that his illness could be cured.

狮王听到自己的病可以治好。

He then asked his guard, the fox, to find him a donkey.

就让警卫狐狸去给自己找一头驴。

The fox soon met one,
and he wanted to trick the donkey into going to the lion king’s den.

狐狸很快就遇到了一只，他想把驴骗去狮王的巢穴。

“Donkey, I know a field where there is plenty of fresh, juicy grass,”
said the fox.

狐狸说：“驴兄，我知道一个水草丰盛的地方。”

“I can take you there if you like.”

你要是愿意，我可以带你去那里。

The donkey was so eager to eat such tasty grass
that he readily agreed to follow the fox.

驴子很想吃到美味的水草，就欣然同意随狐狸前去。

The fox led him into the lion king’s den.

狐狸便把它带到了狮子的兽穴。

As soon as he saw the donkey, the lion king attacked him,
but he was too weak to kill him.

狮子一看见驴子就袭击了他，但是由于太虚弱，没能杀了驴子。

The donkey at once escaped from the place.

于是驴子立马逃离了这个地方。

The fox chased after the donkey.
“Donkey, wait!

狐狸追上前去，说道：驴兄，等等。

Why are you running away?

你为什么要跑呢？

That was the owner of the field
and he was only greeting you.

那是那块地的主人，他只是想问候你。

You have made him very upset.”

你这一跑让他很不安。

The donkey had never before seen a lion,
so he said,

驴子之前从未见过狮子，因此他说：

“All right, I’ll come with you, Fox.”

好吧，我跟你回去，狐兄。

And he followed the fox back to the lion’s den.

然后他就跟着狐狸返回了狮子的兽穴。

This time, the lion king attacked the donkey
with all his strength and managed to kill him.

这一次，狮子用尽全身的力气把驴子杀死了。

He did not eat the donkey’s heart immediately as he wanted to follow his doctor’s advice to take a bath first.

他并没有立马把驴子吃掉，因为按照医生的建议，他要先去洗个澡。

“Fox, guard the dead donkey well,”
said the lion king.

“狐狸，看好这只死驴。”狮王吩咐道。

“I have to take a bath first before eating his heart.”

在吃驴心之前我先去洗个澡。

When the lion king had left for his bath,
the fox at once tore out the donkey’s heart and ate it.

当狮王离开去洗澡的时候，狐狸趁机把驴心吃掉了。

“Oh, it’s so delicious!”
he murmured.

啊，太美味了，他小声说道。

Then he sat beside the dead animal as if guarding it.

然后他坐在死去的驴子旁边，好像在保护它。

When the lion returned to eat the donkey’s heart,
he tore up the body and searched for the heart.

当狮王返回去吃驴心时，它撕开尸体，寻找心脏。

Of course he did not find it.

当然，没找到。

He was very surprised by this.

对此，他感到很震惊。

He turned to the fox and asked,

它转向狐狸，问道：

“Fox, what happened to the donkey’s heart?”

狐狸，驴心去哪了？

The fox answered, “Your majesty, this donkey did not have a heart.
If he had possessed a heart,
he would not have come back after escaping
from Your Majesty the first time.”

狐狸答到：“陛下，这头驴没有心，要是它有的话，第一次从您那逃脱之后，它就不会回来了。”
