Salted Wisdom 盐一样的智慧

A story tells about a senior villager 
who led other villagers carrying salt day and night to a town 
in order to trade barley as food for the winter.

有这么一个故事，讲的是有个年长的村民带着其他几个人日夜运盐进镇换小麦好过冬。

One night they camped in a wilderness with a starry sky above.

有天晚上，他们在野外露营，天空中星光闪耀，

The senior villager, obeying the tradition passed down from ancestry, 
took out three blocks of salt and threw them into the campfire, 
presumably to foretell the changes of weather in the mountains.

这位年长的村民，按照先辈传下来的习俗，取出3把盐撒在火上，估计是用来预测山里的天气变化吧。

All eagerly awaited the old man’s “weather report”: 
所有人都热切等待长者的‘天气预报“：

if the salt in the fire produced crackling sound, they would have good weather in store;
如果盐发出噼里啪啦的响声，则预示好天气；

if no sound was produced, 
it then meant the good weather would soon end 
and a storm would come at any moment.

如果没有声响，预示要变天，风暴随时会来。

The senior villager looked serious. 
长者严肃地看着火堆，

The salt in the campfire made no sound at all.

盐没有发出任何声音。

Convinced by this bad omen,

他认为这是个凶兆，

he urged the whole team to set out immediately after daybreak. 

让整个队伍拂晓即刻出发。
