There are many festivals and celebrations deeply rooted in this season.

Along with it, numerous legends and folk tales that have been passed on throughout the generations. One such festival that is surrounded by these fantastical stories is the mid-autumn festival. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar, an ancient calendar that tracked the progression of time by following the moon's cycles.

同时，还有许多世代相传的传说和民间故事，有一个叫做中秋节的节日，就是关于这些神话故事的。人们在农历八月十五庆祝中秋节，农历是一种古老的历法，它通过观察月盈月缺的周期来计量时间。

It continues to be one of the most celebrated seasonal festivals across the world.

Once upon a time, Earth was quite a bit different than the one that we know today.

很久很久以前，地球与我们今天生活的地球大相径庭。

There were 10 suns up in the sky.

天上有10个太阳。

Living conditions were dreadful for people all over the world.

各地的人们生活条件都很糟糕。

Each day was unbearably hot and there was often little to no water around.

每天都饱受高温折磨，并且附近经常连一滴水都没有。

Farmers were unable to grow much and, as a result, everyone had little to eat and were miserable.

农民种地的收成少得可怜，结果，大家都没东西吃，非常痛苦。

A legendary archer named Hou Yi after seeing how everyone suffered so much wanted to do something to save humanity and make their lives better.

一位名叫后羿的传奇射手看到大家如此痛苦，就想做点什么来拯救苍生，让人们生活的更好。

Using his incredible skill, he was able to shoot down nine of these suns leaving just one left in the sky which would bring happiness and prosperity through the land.

他用精湛的射术射下了十个太阳中的九个，只留下一个在天上，给这片土地上的人们带来了幸福和繁荣。

For his hard work and valiant efforts for the people of Earth, Hou Yi was to be awarded a gift by the Queen Mother of the West.

由于后羿为世人付出了辛勤劳动和英勇努力，西王母娘娘要赏赐他一份大礼。

Wanting to spend life with his beautiful and loving wife, Chang E, forever, the Queen Mother of the West granted Hou Yi's request to be given the elixir of immortality.

他只要和美丽可爱的妻子嫦娥永远在一起，西王母答应了后羿的要求，送给他一副长生不老药。

The elixir was to be split between them and was enough for both of them to be together for eternity.

后羿和嫦娥要各服下一半，这就足以让他们永远在一起。

Upon returning home, Hou Yi explained about the elixir to his wife.

回到家后，后羿向他的妻子说起了仙丹的事情。

She was so delighted about this gracious gift from the Queen Mother of the West and they made a plan to wait until the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.

能收到西王母的这份厚礼，她感到非常高兴，约好等到农历八月十五那天服下仙丹。

This would be when the moon was meant to be the fullest and brightest and would allow them to admire its beauty while taking the elixir together.

这时应该是月亮最圆最亮的时候，他们可以一边欣赏明月，一边共同服用长生不老药。

Just at this moment, while the two were discussing the elixir and their plans to consume it, a wicked man named Fung Meng overheard them speaking.

就在两人讨论仙丹以及服用仙丹的计划时，一个名叫逄蒙的恶棍偷听到了他们的对话。

Deciding the prospect of living forever was too good to pass up, he began hatching a plan to steal the elixir for himself.

他认为长生不老这么好的事情绝对不能错失，于是开始谋划窃取仙丹。

The 15th day of the 8th lunar month finally arrived and Hou Yi had gone out hunting.

农历八月十五终于到了，后羿外出打猎。

Seizing this opportunity while Hou Yi was away, Feng Meng rushed to Chang E's home and forced her to give him the elixir.

逄蒙趁后羿不在，闯进嫦娥家中，逼她把长生不老药交出来。

Knowing that she would not be able to defeat Feng Meng on her own, with no other choice she took the whole elixir before he could steal it.

嫦娥知道光靠自己是打不过逄蒙的，为了不让他偷走仙丹，她别无选择，只好把一整颗全吞了下去。

Since the whole elixir was meant to be for two of them, the double portion caused an interesting side effect.

因为这颗长生不老药是为两个人准备的，所以双人份的药量产生了一种意想不到的副作用。

She began slowly floating up to the sky.

她开始慢慢飘上了天空。

As Hou Yi was returning home, he could see his darling wife going higher and higher but there was nothing that could be done.

后羿到家的时候，只能眼睁睁看着挚爱的妻子越飞越高，却无能为力。

Although she could never return back to Earth to reunite with Hou Yi, she decided to live on the moon to be as close to him as she could.

尽管她再也无法回到人间与后羿团圆，便决定住在月亮上，以尽可能地靠近他。

When the moon was fullest and brightest on the same 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Hou Yi and Chang E would have an opportunity to see one another from afar.

当月亮在农历八月十五最圆最亮的时候，后羿和嫦娥就有机会遥望彼此。

To show his endless dedication and love towards his wife, Hou Yi would make and arrange all of her favorite dishes, such as a selection of fruits and moon cakes.

为了表达对妻子无尽的奉献和爱，后羿会烹制和摆放所有她喜欢的菜肴，比如精挑细选的水果和月饼。

As the years went on, these gestures of love would be passed on through the generations.

随着时间的推移，这些表达爱意的方式也代代相传。

Traditions will be formed and the mid-autumn festival would come to be known as a symbol of family reunion where loved ones gather together to share moon cakes, hang up lanterns and admire the full moon in the night sky.

传统于是便形成了，中秋节成为了举家团圆的代名词，彼此关爱的亲人聚在一起分享月饼，悬挂灯笼，欣赏夜空中的满月。
