>US 2024 election ad spending to top $10 billion, a record high

The 2024 US presidential election cycle will be the most expensive ever, with all political ad spending expected to reach $10.2 billion, which is 13 percent more than the 2020 presidential election cycle and 292 percent more than 2016, ad consulting firm AdImpact said in a new forecast released Tuesday.

Of the $10.2 billion spent on political advertising, AdImpact said it expects spending of $2.7 billion on the presidential election, $2.1 billion on Senate races, $1.7 billion on House races, about $400 million on gubernatorial races and $3.3 billion on other races.

Political ads are mainly broadcast on TV, radio, the internet and other media. According to AdImpact, several key “swing states” will be the primary locations for political ads, including Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia and Michigan.

Campaigns are now stepping up their advertising spending. Political ad spending in the 2024 election cycle has already reached $652 million, 75 percent higher than at the same point in the last presidential campaign.

>Google faces trial in DOJ antitrust case

The US Department of Justice opened its antitrust case against tech giant Google on Tuesday.

Google pays more than $10 billion a year to Apple, Samsung and others to maintain its position as the default search engine on computers and mobile devices, according to the Justice Department, shutting out competitors and stifling innovation in the industry.

Google has 9 percent of the search engine market in the US. Kenneth Dintzer, the Justice Department’s lead litigator, said that as the default browser, Google processes more searches and collects more data that can be used to improve future searches and its advertising products, giving it an advantage over competitors.

Google says people choose Google as their default search engine because it is the best choice and offers the value, not because of a lack of competitors.

The trial could last up to 10 weeks, and the district judge may not rule until early next year. If Google is found to have violated the law, the judge will schedule a separate hearing to decide how to punish Google. The company is likely to appeal. As a result, the case could take years to resolve.
