The brains of teenagers who take up smoking may be different from those who don't take up the habit, consequently exerting negative influences on various aspects of their lives, according to a recent study published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

A research team led by the universities of Cambridge and Warwick in Britain and Fudan University in China found that teens that started smoking cigarettes by 14 years of age had significantly less gray matter in a section of the brain's left frontal lobe. The result is linked to a decrease in cognitive abilities among teenagers, rendering them more susceptible to adopting bad habits and engaging in socially inappropriate behaviors.

Trevor Robbions, a professor at the University of Cambridge and one of the authors of the study, underscored smoking as one of the most common addictive behaviors globally, also a primary cause of adult mortality, and the beginning of a smoking habit is most likely to occur during adolescence. The research data could help treat and prevent nicotine addiction from an early age.
