> The phenomenon of "leftover blind boxes" in China
What is inside a mystery box? Usually the answer would be toys, but now stores have been putting unsold food or food nearing their expiration date into mystery boxes, calling them “leftover mystery boxes”. With their very low prices, they have become increasingly popular among people in many cities in China, such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu.
The trend is reminiscent of an app from the UK. Students could order “mystery boxes” from an app called Too Good To Go. These boxes were usually sold by local stores.
The price of each box was about 3 to 5 pounds (or 27 to 45 yuan), and there were usually three to four items inside. For example, a 3-pound box from Costa had three kinds of bread and one muffin cake inside - the original price was around 10 pounds.
The joy and excitement from saving money is not the only benefit of these boxes. They also help reduce food waste, therefore helping the environment as well as one’s wallet.
Food safety is another concern for mystery boxes. Being so close to the expiration date, the food may “secretly” go bad although it appears to be fine. It’s also worth mentioning that some food may not be tasty or has strange flavors, which may be why they are left over to begin with.

The Japanese government has been pushing to start dumping the contaminated water this summer, which has aroused strong opposition and doubts from domestic fishing groups, neighboring countries, Pacific coastal areas, South Pacific island countries and the overall international community.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) does not endorse the Japanese government's decision with its safety review report on Japan's plan to release nuclear-contaminated water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea, the report presented Tuesday by the IAEA chief showed.
At the invitation of Japan's foreign ministry, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi started his four-day visit to Japan on Tuesday, including a trip to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
"I would like to emphasize that the release of the treated water stored at Fukushima Daiichi Power Station is a national decision by the Government of Japan and that this report is neither a recommendation nor an endorsement of that policy," Grossi noted in the foreword of the report, which he delivered in person on Tuesday to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
"The views expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of IAEA Member States," said the report, noting that "neither the IAEA nor its Member States assume any responsibility for consequences which may arise from its use".
The IAEA will have a continued presence at the Fukushima Daiichi plant site to review, monitor and assess the discharge activities for decades to come, Grossi said, adding that whether other countries are allowed to participate in the supervision is a decision to be made by the Japanese government.
Meanwhile, the credibility of the IAEA report has been questioned after South Korean media revealed that the Japanese government has made a political donation of more than 1 million euros to the IAEA in order to resolve the differences of opinion between the IAEA and third country experts conducting the review.
