1.  The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning.

【讲解】

1) 这句话中用了过去进行时：was/were +动词的ing形式，表示过去某个时间点正在发生的状况。

什么时候会用到这个时态？

我们在讲故事，描述当时正在发生的事就需要用过去进行时态。

很多童话故事在开头会描述一个场景把人们带入情境（setting）

如：有一天晚上，三只小猪正在吃晚餐。这时，有人敲门。原来是大灰狼。

One evening, three little pigs were having dinner at home. Just at that time, someone was knocking at the door.  It was the wolf.

总结：过去进行时的作用就是：________【请听音频】

2)   All morning表示整个早上

注意中间不加冠词the,不说all the morning

整天：all day

整晚：all night

整一周：all week

整个夏天：all summer

我一整个夏天都在学习：（听记）

我一个晚上都没睡着：

I was sleepless all night.

或者I was up all night.

2. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.

【讲解】

1) A few hours earlier表示几个小时之前

几天之前：a few days earlier

几周之前：a few weeks earlier

几小时之后：a few hours later

几天之后：a few days later

几个周之后：a few weeks later

造个句子：

几天前，我们刚刚认识对方。但仅仅几小时之后，我们就成了好朋友,因为我们有很多共同爱好。

A few days earlier, we met each other at a party. But just a few hours later, we became close friends, because we shared a lot of hobbies. 或 We had a lot of things in common.

2) Someone had told the police that......

要特别留意时态，had +过去分词表示过去完成时。

现在完成时，是在现在这个时间点，回望过去已经发生的事。

过去完成时，就是在过去的时间点，回望更遥远的过去已经发生的事。

过去完成时，理解有一点难度：

A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that….

几小时之前，有人报警说..

这句话怎么理解，就是a few hours earlier

首先，我们乘时光机回到几小时前，

小测试：假设当时是下午3点，那么有人报警的动作发生在什么时候？

A. 3点钟      B . 3点之前

正确的是B，因为文章用了had told表示过去的过去。

再举个例子：

你需要寄一本重要的书给朋友Mary.

Mary问你寄了没有？

Have you sent me the book ?

你说：在上周五之前就已经把信寄给Mary了，但具体记不清哪天，可能周四，或周三。

I had sent you the book last Friday

= I sent you the book before last Friday

3) 另外，that the thieves would try to steal the diamonds用了过去将来时。

为什么？

因为有人告诉警察的时候，是一个过去的时间，在过去的时间讨论将来需要过去将来时

举个简单例子：

上周你的好朋友Bill Gates说，他将会参加你的生日宴会。他当时的原话是：

I will attend your birthday party.

但，你要表达他当时告诉我他会来参加生日宴会，就要用过去将来时：

Bill Gates told me that he would come to my birthday party.

3. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. 

当飞机到达后，有些侦探在主楼等待，另一些在停机坪等候。

1）Some…. Others：一些，另外一些

如果只有两组：some...... the other......

在others前加the ,特指其他的 

比如在一个班上有来自中国的同学，其他的来自美国。（听记）

如果除中国外，还有美国，其余来自英国

Some students are from China, others are from America, and the rest are from Britain.

some......others......the rest(剩余的）

2）While引导时间状语从句，表示与此同时，往往表示一个正在发生的事

比如：我正在读书，我的邻居却在大声唱歌

I was reading while my neighbor was singing loudly. And I got very mad.

4. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

1）To one’s surprise  

表示：令人惊讶的是

To one’s加上一个表示情绪的名词，表示令人….

造句练习：

令我惊讶的是，我们班数学学霸竟然考试不及格。

To my surprise , the math geek in our class failed the exam.

Geek极客：Geeks are crazy about a certain field or subject such as computer or math

令我兴奋的是，我竟然拿了满分。（听记）

然而，令你失望的是,老师告诉你，分数搞错了。你和学霸的分数颠倒了。

To my disappointment, the teacher told me that there was a mistake in the score report. Actually , the math geek got full marks and I didn’t pass the exam.
