W:Didyou see the late-nightfilm on television yesterday?

M:Theone on Channel 8?

W:No.On Channel 5. It was about a couple who hiked across the Sahara Desert.

M:No,I didn’tsee it.Was it good?

W:Well,it was quite good, I suppose, but all those miles of sand did get a bit boringafter a while. I think I prefer horror films to travel stories or love stories.By the way, what did you do last night?

W:Soundsunusual! What was the food like?

M:Yes,I notice you always eat chips! Don’t you ever get sick of chips?

W:No,never. In fact, I’drather eat chips than bread.

M:Well,I prefer trying new food to eating the same old things day after day.

W:Isee. In that case, you won’tbe coming to the cafe at lunchtime with me. You’d rather eat on yourown, right?

M:Well...

Text10

Aspecial laboratory at the University of Chicago is busy only at night. It is adream laboratory where researchers are at work studying dreamers.Their findingshave discovered that everyone dreams from three to seven times a night, although in ordinary life a person may remember none or only one of his dreams.

Whilethe subjects—usuallystudents—sleep, special machines record their brainwaves and eye movements aswell as the body movements that signal the end of a dream.Surprisingly, all subjects sleep soundly.

Observersreport that a person usually keeps moving restlessly before a dream.Once thedream has started, his body relaxes and his eyes become more active, as if thecurtain had gone up on a show. As soon as the machine shows that the dream isover, a bell wakens the sleeper. He sits up, records his dream, and goes back tosleep—perhaps to dream some more.

Researchershave found that if the dreamer is wakened immediately after his dream, he canusually recall the entire dream. If he is allowed to sleep even for five moreminutes, his memory of the dream will have disappeared.
