Italian authorities finally discover why Venice's Grand Canal turned fluorescent green
The Grand Canal in Venice turned fluorescent green on 28 May, sparking debate as to the cause of the colour change. Now authorities have said that the chemical fluorescein, used to find leaks during underwater construction, was responsible. Despite being non-toxic, it remains uncertain how such a large quantity of the substance ended up in the canal. Although police are investigating a number of potential leads, including environmental activism, no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
