In March of this year, a 15-year-old girl from Guangdong province died from severe malnutrition after going on a strict diet to lose weight. According to her father, the teenage girl, known under the assumed name Xiaoling, had not consumed  any food for nearly 50 days except for water. She was 165 cm tall and weighed only 24.8 kg.

"She was so light. It was almost like I was picking up a quilt," said a doctor at Shenzhen Children's Hospital, who was shocked at her weight when lifting her up for a brain CT scan after she was transferred to the hospital.

Xiaoling, at her heaviest, weighed 52 kg, when she was in sixth grade, according to her mother. However, she became self-conscious about her weight after entering junior high school and rejected any food containing oil. The change came after Xiaoling found out that a girl who attracted the boy she had a crush on was slimmer than her, according to her classmates.

After going on the unsustainable diet for one year and three months, she stopped having menstruation and was taken to the hospital by her parents. She was later diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, which is an eating disorder that makes you obsess about your weight and food.

This problem affects more women than men and often starts during the teenage years. The number of young women between 15 and 19 who have anorexia nervosa has increased every 10 years since 1930. Pressure to conform to a certain definition of "beautiful" can have psychological effects, such as depression, eating disorders, and low self-esteem, which can start from an adolescent age and continue into adulthood.

> Is drinking bone broth good for you? Experts weigh in

While bone broth can provide some beneficial nutrients, experts don't view the popular beverage as a vital addition to your wellness regime. Made by simmering animal bones in water for a long time with vegetables, spices and sometimes other ingredients like apple cider vinegar, bone broth can be "part of the puzzle, but is not a quick fix," says Laura Ligos, a registered dietitian nutritionist and specialist in sports dietetics.

"The goal is to help pull out important nutrients from the bones, like collagen, gelatin, amino acids like glycine as well as minerals like calcium and magnesium," she says. "It's these nutrients that are extracted from the bones that have been shown to be helpful with gut, skin, hair, and nail health."

Benefits of bone broth include providing humans with certain nutrients from the connective tissue and meat of the bones, which in turn can aid in strengthening muscle and bones, says Jenna Litt, a registered dietitian at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Currently there is not enough research to support the benefits or detriments of bone broth on gut health, Litt says.

Do I need bone broth in my diet? The short answer: No. It's important to zoom out and look at the big picture when thinking about nutrition, Ligos says. "There likely isn't one food item that's going to be the golden ticket to our health. It's a combination of things that we do that can support our health over the long haul. Bone broth can certainly be a part of that — but not the only part of that."

For example, if you're interested in improving skin, nail and hair health, simply increasing protein intake in your diet has been shown to yield results, Litt says, adding that "the use of bone broth is not required."
