How do you evaluate the business environment in China, as the government has been highlighting the negative list for foreign investment in the new government work report?

We see that the environment in China is more and more favorable for us. We see more and more openings, less and less restriction on the field for our business Saint-Gobain construction industry.

我们看到中国的营商环境对我们越来越有利。越来越多方面都放开了,对我们圣戈班建筑业务的限制也越来越少。

For instanceSaint-Gobainour main field is construction materials. In this fieldwe have been free to operate with a wholly owned foreign enterprise for quite long. We had no restrictions for several years.

And in the automotive industry until 2020if I remember wellit was not possible for our customers, OEM or car makers to make fully owned enterprisebut this restriction was lifted two years ago.

What kind of business do you currently have in China What kind of areas do you think will be very free to develop in China?

We have many sites, close to 50 sites around China in different areas. One of the big trend that we feel is a difference between the richest parts of China like the Yangtze River Delta, like Guangdong or the south area or around Beijing, where the government wants to promote high-end industry, they want to promote IT, they want to promote services, a bit less traditional industry. On the contrary, when we move west, when we go northeast, then more traditional industry are still more welcome.

我们有许多工厂,在中国各地就有近50个。我们当前感受到的一个大趋势是,在中国经济较发达的地区,比如长三角、广东、南方地区和北京周边,政府更想促进高端产业、IT业和服务业的发展,传统产业相对来说不多。相反,当我们来到西部和东北地区的时候,我们发现在这里传统产业更受欢迎。

For instancerecently we had the a new plant opening. They are more in the north, like in Henan province, Yuzhou city or in Shanxi, Datong, we set a new plant there.

The government is also pushing midwest like Sichuan, and Yunnan Province. It's also market which are increasing because the middle class population is increasing a lot on those regions. For instancein 2021we opened two new joint ventures in the Chengdu or in Chongqing. So we are following this policy and adapting ourselves to this direction and it matches very well what we want to do because the market are developing a lot in those cities.

Over the past 20 years, Kaercher have established a sales subsidiary, a plant, an R&D center, and a regional headquarters here in China. Are you employing any other strategies to help the company stay in touch with the Chinese market?

To be local is for us very important. And that's why, as you mentioned, we have just established our new R&D Center in Suzhou. That's why we are very much committed and we want to grow our R&D Center from roughly 120 people to over 300 people

We are planning to be closer to the market to understand how the local market developed and also to create tailor-made products for this market to get to the special needs of our Chinese consumers. We see that the consumers are very much into AI, into applications connected devices. and this is what we are driving faster to the market, then we would not be able to without having local resources.

We are also still looking into possibilities to expand our manufacturing, to deliver high-tech and innovation directly made in China for the local market. And then later on for export.

China is paying high attention to smart manufacturing.

Kaercher is also looking how to fit into this overall topic of AI and smart manufacturing. The advantage is that China has a lot of resources currently dedicated to this topic with the complete supply chains being built up to support smart manufacturing.

卡赫也在探寻如何切入人工智能和智能制造领域。中国目前在这一领域投入了大量资源,并且正在建立完整的供应链以支持智能制造,这是一大优势。

But all the new technologies emerge extremely fast in China, for example, battery, battery technology. China is at the forefront of these new key tech technologies. So overall from these policies, we expect that they will strengthen the overall market supply chain and innovation platform to continue fostering those new technologies.

像电池这类新技术在中国正迅猛发展。在这些新的关键技术方面中国都处于领先地位。因此整体来看,我们相信这些政策将助推整个市场的供应链和创新平台的发展,并大大推动新技术的培育。

How is the Chinese market different from other markets around the world? And how does Sumitomo Pharma benefit from being here?

China has been stressing the Healthy China 2030 Plan. What are your thoughts on this plan? And what sort of opportunities do you see on the horizon?
