1.CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON PHASE 2 OF DEEP SPACE OBSERVATION FACILITY

“中国复眼”二期开工支撑小行星防御计划

Construction started yesterday on the second phase of a deep space observation radar facility in Chongqing. Dubbed【把....称为】 “China Com-pound Eye”, the facility will be used for the country’s near-Earth asteroid【小行星】defense and planetary science research. Zhang Hong has the details.

2月14日，位于重庆的深空探测雷达二期工程开始施工。“中国复眼”建成后将为我国近地小行星撞击防御和行星科学研究提供重要支撑。记者张泓带来更多详细报道。

The second phase of“China Compound Eye” will cover more than 20 hectares【公顷】. 25 high-resolution radars, each with a diameter of 30 meters, are expected to be completed in 2025. The facility will be used to observe and capture high-resolution images of asteroids, the moon and Earth-like planets.

“中国复眼”二期项目占地面积20多公顷，计划于2025年建成25部30米孔径雷达，将用于观测和拍摄小行星、月球和类地行星的高分辨率图像。

The facility will be capable of observing an asteroid with a diameter of less than 100 meters 10 million kilometers away. We can get to study its components, its rotation rate and how its orbit is altered after being hit.

可以观测一千万公里外的，只有几十米（直径）大小的小行星。比如说它到底是什么组成的，它自转的速度到底是什么样子，受到撞击以后，它轨道有什么样的改变。

An insect’s compound eye is coordinated by several small eyes, which can be processed by the brain to realize remote observation. Each radar will work together like an insect with compound eyes to detect objects in space at greater distances. Construction will take place in three phases. The first phase comprised four radars and was completed last December. The facility is expected to have more than 100 radars after completion of the third phase.

昆虫的复眼由多只小眼睛组成，可以通过大脑协同进行远程观察。多部雷达如同昆虫复眼，能实现更远距离的深空探测。建设将分三个阶段进行。项目分三期建设，首期项目由4部雷达组成，已于去年底建成。三期工程计划将雷达单元数量扩至百部规模。

About 1.65 million primary and middle school students and 530,000 kindergarten kids in Shanghai began their spring semester today. Schools around the city were ready with a barrage【一连串】of health and safety lessons. Zhang Hong has more.

上海约165万名中小学生和53万名幼儿园儿童今天（02/15）开始他们的春季学期。全市的学校都准备好了一连串的健康和安全课程。张红有更多消息。

At 7am, some students arrived early at Luwan No.1 Central Primary School in Huangpu District. They said they were excited to return. About 1,400 students and staff attended the flag raising ceremony on the playground.

早上7点，黄浦区卢湾一中心小学已有不少学生提早到校，孩子们说很高兴能回学校。今天的升旗仪式，全校约1400名师生在操场共同参加。

Most students have gone through the pandemic for three years. They may be terrified, especially the grade 12 students, about the future. We will help them transition from home to campus life, through counseling, school clubs and mental health awareness activities.

40,000 police and their assistants were on duty to ensure smooth traffic and protect students. At Pudong’s New World Experimental Primary School, 120 students got a chance to wear custom-made police uniforms, as the Pudong Juvenile Police Academy was established. It’s the first police academy set on a school campus in Shanghai.

We taught students to recognize more traffic signs and show them how to wear a helmet properly. We will conduct more sessions using textbooks that are easier to understand for students.

Students and teachers will not be required to show PCR and antigen test results. Some schools still check the temperature of students when they arrive on campus and have a quarantine area. Education authorities require students to wear masks on the way to and from school, but it’s optional on campus.

More than 35,000 people have died in Turkey as a result of last week’s earthquakes, making it the country’s deadliest such disaster since 1939. While the focus of rescue efforts has switched to helping desperate survivors who lack food and shelter, stories continue to emerge of survivors being found beneath the rubble. Zhang Yue has more.

上周土叙地震截至2月15日已造成土耳其境内3.5万余人遇难（截至2月16日17：00，土耳其死亡人数超过3.6万），超过1939年土耳其大地震，成为该国百年来“最致命的地震”。震后第九天，废墟下仍在不断传来生命的“信号”，救灾工作的重点对象转为无居所、缺乏生存物资的幸存者。记者张乐带来更多详细报道。

A 77-year-old woman was pulled out from under the ruins of a collapsed building in Adiyaman Province. Another woman was rescued in the southern Turkish city of Hatay on Tuesday.Both of them managed to survive being buried for over 200 hours. Only 9 survivors were found and rescued on Tuesday. As fewer and fewer survivors are being found, more focus is being placed on helping survivors who are now struggling without food or shelter in the bitter cold. Rescuers and relief workers slept near the wreckage of buildings, trying to keep warm with blankets and fires in the city of Antakya. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that enforcement of stricter building regulations was needed, adding that his government would continue work until the last person was rescued in the quake-hit area.

This increased the effect of the destruction which brought an energy equal to hundreds of powerful atomic bombs. The fact that 98% of the buildings that have collapsed in the latest disaster are the ones that are built before 1999.It shows us the progress we made in the standardization of buildings and inspections, but it also reminds us that we need to be stricter.

As families mourn the loss of loved ones, resentment has grown among those affected and many are now looking to assign blame for the extent of the disaster. Authorities in Turkey are investigating 163 people in connection with building collapses. Of those under investigation, 8 have been arrested and 48 are in police custody. In Syria, the death toll in the northwestern region has passed 2,200. Over 1,400 people have died in government-controlled areas.Until Monday, the United Nations has only been allowed to deliver aid to the area through a single border crossing with Turkey, or via government territory, which presented its own logistical【后勤上的】and political challenges. Two new crossing points from Turkey into Syria were opened on Monday.

Today, I’m announcing that the United Nations is launching a 397 million US-dollar humanitarian appeal for the people of earthquake-ravaged Syria.

The first Saudi Arabian plane delivering aid for quake-hit Syrians arrived in Aleppo on Tuesday morning. Saudi Arabia had raised some 50 million US dollars in a public campaign to aid Turkey and Syria.
