You feel comfortable just walking up to someone you find interesting and striking up a conversation.

- Ask a question: Do you know who is going to speak in the afternoon?

- Give a compliment: Your presentation was very inspiring and informational.

- Talk about an event or situation: I heard the café around the corner is famous for its London Fog. Have you tried it?

- Ask an opinion: So I heard you jog every day. I’m looking for a pair of comfortable shoes. Can you recommend a couple of brands?

- Offer help: Would you like me to show you around the city this weekend?

- Ask for help: I’m having trouble logging on to the Wi-Fi. Would you mind telling me how to do it?

- Ask open-ended questions: This is my first time coming to San Francisco. I plan to stay for 3 days. Any recommendations on where I can go for a hike?

- Mention a mutual colleague/friend: Do you know May from the finance department? She was my high school friend.

- Introduce yourself: Hi, my name is Nicole. I’m from the sales department.

- Ask for an update: I heard you were working on a new project. How’s it going?

- Discuss common interests: Are you following the NBA?

- Talk about a shared trait: I heard you’re from Vancouver. Me too. I’m also from Vancouver.

- Talk about the weather: I can’t believe the beautiful weather we’ve had this week.
