China will optimize immigration administration policies and measures starting from Jan. 8, 2023 in compliance with the country's downgraded COVID-19 response measures.
自2023年1月8日起，国家移民管理局将积极适应疫情防控新阶段新形势新要求，优化移民管理政策和措施。
 
The National Immigration Administration issued a notice on Tuesday, saying that the optimized policies and measures include the resumption of accepting and approval of Chinese citizens' applications for ordinary passports for the purposes of tourism and visiting friends abroad starting from the date.
国家移民管理局12月27日发布公告，自2023年1月8日起优化移民管理政策措施，有序恢复受理审批中国公民因出国旅游、访友申请普通护照。
 
The administration will also resume the processing of endorsements for Chinese mainland residents to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for tourism and business purposes, as well as the issuance of exit-and-entry permits of the People's Republic of China and exit-and-entry permits for border control areas, the notice said.
国家移民管理局还将恢复办理内地居民旅游、商务赴港签注；恢复签发中华人民共和国出入境通行证，恢复签发边境地区出入境通行证等。
 
Services related to the application for ordinary visas, stay permits, and residence permits by foreigners will be resumed, the notice said, adding that expedited procedures may be applied for in case of urgent need.
国家移民管理局将恢复受理审批外国人申请普通签证延期、换发、补发，停留证件签发、换发、补发，居留证件签发、延期、换发、补发；申请人确有紧急需求的，可循加急程序办理。
 
The resumed services will also include the issuance of port visas, the implementation of the 24/72/144-hour visa-free transit policy, and the issuance of temporary entry permits, according to the notice.
恢复口岸签证签发，恢复执行24/72/144小时过境免签政策，依法签发临时入境许可。

Cats have a bit of a reputation for standoffishness, especially compared with dogs. But if you find your feline friend is a little hard to bond with, maybe you're just not speaking their language.

Research shows that it's actually not so difficult. You just need to smile at them more. Not smile in the human way, by baring your teeth, but the cat way: by narrowing your eyes and blinking slowly.

If you've spent any time around cats, you've probably seen their "partially closed eyes" facial expression, accompanied by slow blinking. It's similar to how human eyes narrow when smiling, and usually occurs when cat is relaxed and content. The expression is interpreted as a kind of cat smile.

In a study published in 2020, scientists observed cat-human interactions, and were able to confirm that this act of blinking slowly makes cats – both familiar and unfamiliar animals – approach and be receptive to humans.

In the first experiment, owners slow-blinked at 21 cats from 14 different households. Once the cat was settled and comfy in one spot in their home environment, the owners were instructed to sit about a meter away and slow-blink when the cat was looking at them. The second experiment included 24 cats from eight different households. This time, it wasn't the owners doing the blinking but the researchers, who'd had no prior contact with the cat.
