AI Painting app goes viral amid raising ethics concerns

An app which uses artificial intelligence to render digital portraits based on photos users submit has gone viral worldwide. There are several tools for users to edit photos including magic touch, replace or blur out the background, apply art filters and special effects or add borders to their pictures. Users can also transfer their photos into various art styles such as anime, cartoons, sketches or watercolours.

Once the model learns that information, it can look at a new picture and reproduce that image in one of the styles it's been trained to reproduce. Artists have raised concerns about the murky ethics underlying the technology.

Some artists claim this not only devalues their own work, churning out 50 images at a fraction of the cost of a commission, but it is potentially appropriating their work, including their signature.

Users might just want to use the app to create a new profile picture, but Lensa's privacy policy allows the company to use their “face data” to train their AI algorithm.

The app's terms of use also give Lensa “perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable, sub-licensable license” to use the portraits created in the app. Some users, particularly women, have also said the app produces oversexualized images with no prompting.

“These representation biases are more an indictment of the art styles the AI was trained on than the technology.” Jennifer Gradecki said, an associate professor of art and design at Northeastern. Companies can put in more work into scrubbing and scraping the data that is being fed to their algorithms, using categories like gender and race as “control signals” to make the model more fair.

Things you should never do when you have a fever

Don't Drink Certain Beverages. Alcohol, soda and caffeinated drinks should be avoided when you have a fever," says Pauline J. Jose, MD, a specialist in family medicine with pH Labs. "They can cause dehydration when we really need to hydrate most."

Don't Overheat. "Do not overdress or put yourself in a place that is too hot," says physician Dr. Dimitar Marinov. "This can disturb the thermoregulation of the body and make your fever worse."

Don't Double Up Your Medications. "Acetaminophen is generally an effective drug for treating fever, however, exceeding the recommended dosage can lead to serious damage to your liver and even death," says Marinov.

Don't Starve. "Fever speeds up your metabolism and you need even more calories from food. Starving can literally cripple your immune system," says Marinov.

Don't Forget To Drink Water. "A fever will increase the respiratory rate, and therefore water loss, and sweating increases in order to lower the body temperature," says Ralph E. Holsworth, director of clinical and scientific research with Essentia Water. "Moreover, water intake is commonly decreased during a fever, which will ultimately aggravate dehydration."
