‘Goblin mode’ is Oxford word of the year for 2022

Oxford Dictionary has announced "goblin mode" as its choice for 2022's Word of the Year after it opened voting to the public. Although first seen on Twitter in 2009, goblin mode went viral on social media in February 2022.

Goblin mode– a slang term, often used in the expressions "in goblin mode" or "to go goblin mode" – is "a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations".

Speaking at a special event to announce this year’s approach to selecting the Oxford Word of the Year, Ben Zimmer, American linguist and lexicographer, said: "Goblin Mode really does speak to the times and the zeitgeist, and it is certainly a 2022 expression. People are looking at social norms in new ways. It gives people the license to ditch social norms and embrace new ones."

The Oxford Corpus lists many vivid examples of goblin mode, including, "Goblin mode is like when you wake up at 2am and shuffle into the kitchen wearing nothing but a long T-shirt to make a weird snack," as quoted in the Guardian newspaper. More recently, an opinion piece in The Times stated that "too many of us… have gone ‘goblin mode’ in response to a difficult year."

Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, says: "Given the year we’ve just experienced, 'Goblin mode' resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point. It’s a relief to acknowledge that we’re not always the idealized, curated selves that we’re encouraged to present on our Instagram and TikTok feeds. This has been demonstrated by the dramatic rise of platforms like BeReal, where users share images of their unedited selves, often capturing self-indulgent moments in goblin mode. People are embracing their inner goblin, and voters choosing 'goblin mode' as the Word of the Year tells us the concept is likely here to stay."

MPs and peers do worse than 10-year-olds in math and English SATs

British MPs and peers tasked with completing a year-6 SAT exam have scored lower results on average than the country’s 10-year-olds.

Only 44 percent of the cross-party group of parliamentarians dubbed the Westminster Class of 2022 achieved the expected standard in math, and just 50 percent achieved the expected standard in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Across the country, 59 percent of pupils aged 10 and 11 reached the expected standard in the SATs of math, reading and writing this year.

More Than A Score hope the politicians will take the high-pressured experience away with them and realize that "the exams only judge schools but do not help children’s learning" at that age.

Robin Walker, the new chair of the education select committee, acknowledged a need to reform exams for 10 to 11-year-olds, but refused to back dropping the exams altogether. "There will always be a place for testing, but that cannot be the be-all and end-all to accessing the most opportunity. Ultimately, it's not just about testing, but it's how we develop their love of reading."

Alison Ali from More Than A Score said: "This is more than a test of math and English capabilities, it's an opportunity for MPs to put themselves in the shoes of 10 and 11-year-olds … they will see how absurd some of the questions faced by children are, how these absurdities influence and narrow the whole curriculum, and how they are only used to judge schools, not to help children's learning."
