Addiction is a serious mental health condition that can happen to anyone, no matter what age gender, race or nationality. As patron of The Forward Trust, I have met many people who've suffered from the effects of addiction.

上瘾是一种严重的心理健康问题，可能发生在任何人身上，无论年龄性别、种族还是国籍。作为前进信托基金的赞助人，我见过许多遭受过上瘾影响的人。

Attitudes to addiction are changing, but we're not there yet and we need to be. Still, the shame of addiction is stopping people and families asking for help and people are still tragically losing their lives.

人们对上瘾的态度正在改变，但还没有达到我们的预期目的。尽管如此，上瘾的羞耻感仍在阻止人们和家庭寻求帮助，许多人还是悲惨地失去了生命。

We as a society need to recognize that the only way to help those suffering is to try and understand what has led them to addiction, to empathize with them and to be compassionate to their struggles.

And so today, during addiction awareness week, I want to share a message of support to those who are continuing to suffer.

Please know that addiction is not a choice, no one chooses to become an addict. I want you to know that this is also a serious health condition. Please do not let shame hold you back from getting the help you so desperately need.

请记住，上瘾不是一种选择，没有人会选择成为一个瘾君子。我也想让你知道，这也是一个严重的健康问题。请不要让羞耻感阻止你获得迫切需要的帮助。

The charity is leading the Taking Action on Addiction campaign, along with others are working across the country, delivering life-changing work to help people recover and move forward.
