Self-sufficient primary school in Yunnan goes viral
Jingwai Mingde, a primary school in Xuanwei, Yunnan province, with more than 1,000 teachers and students, has achieved food self-sufficiency over 15 years by offering farming for students. Each class is allocated a piece of land to plant seasonal vegetables or raise livestock, which become ingredients for their daily meals.
Students do farm chores twice a week under the guidance of teachers. There is also a zoo in the school with deer, ostriches and other animals to help students expand their horizons and get along with animals. The school set up a greenhouse with fruit trees and medicinal herbs for students to learn about botanicals in nature, instead of just listening to teachers in the classroom.
"Children who have not kissed the land will not have a complete childhood," said school principal Lei Yingfei. "The farm labor will build excellent character that lasts a lifetime."

New Zealand government plans to tax animals' gas emissions
New Zealand’s government has proposed taxing the greenhouse gasses that farm animals create by burping and urinating as part of a plan to tackle climate change. The government said the farm levy would be a world first, and that farmers should be able to recoup the cost by charging more for climate-friendly products.
The plan would see farmers pay for gas emissions from their animals, such as methane gas emanating from cows, and nitrous oxide in the urine of livestock. Opposition lawmakers from the conservative ACT Party said the plan would actually increase worldwide emissions by moving farming to other countries that were less efficient at making food.
New Zealand's farming industry is vital to its economy, and dairy products are the nation’s largest export earner. There are just 5 million people in New Zealand but some 10 million beef and dairy cattle and 26 million sheep. The outsized industry has made New Zealand unusual in that about half of its greenhouse gas emissions come from farms. Under the government's proposed plan, farmers would start to pay for emissions in 2025, with the pricing yet to be finalized.
