The alchemistpicked up a book that someone in the caravan had brought. Leafing through thepages, he found a story about Narcissus.

The alchemistknew the legend of Narcissus,a youth who knelt daily beside a lake to contemplate his own beauty. He was sofascinated by himself that, one morning, he fell into the lake and drowned. Atthe spot where he fell, a flower was born, which was called the narcissus.

But this wasnot how the author of the book ended the story. He said that whenNarcissus died, the goddesses of the forest appeared and found the lake, whichhad been fresh water, transformed into a lake of salty tears.

“Why do youweep?” the goddesses asked.

前言

 炼金人拿起一本书，是商队里有人带来的。他打开书翻看时，发现了一个关于Narcissus的故事。

炼金人知道Narcissus的故事。他是一个年轻人，每天都跪在湖边欣赏自己的美貌。他是那么迷恋自己，有一天，不小心掉进湖里，淹死了。他落水的那个地方，长出来一朵花，人们称之为水仙花（narcissus）。

但这本书的作者不是这样结束故事的。他说，当Narcissus死了时，森林女神来了，发现那个湖本来是一汪淡水，现在却变成了咸涩的眼泪。

“你为什么哭啊？”女神们问道。
