Namaari clutched the Gem shard. She could still feel the faint warmth from Raya’s hand in it, even as she watched Raya turn to stone.

When Namaari managed to tear her eyes away from Raya’s frozen face, she found Tong, Boun, and Noi all staring at her. No one seemed to know what to do.

Boun looked at his Gem shard, looked at his friends, and then walked over to Namaari. Placing the Gem piece in her hand, he bowed and gave her a final glance.

As the Druun swept toward him, Boun took Raya’s hand. When they’d finished with him, the boy’s statue was huddled to her side like a child clinging to his mother.

Namaari felt something brush her leg. She looked down and saw Noi. The toddler was holding up her Gem piece, trying to give it to her.

Tong scooped Noi up. He added his shard to hers, then handed them both to Namaari, looking at her hard with his one eye. He cradled Noi in his arms as the Druun engulfed them.

The Ongis, rushing to stand around Tong’s leg, were swept up, too. They all turned to stone.

Namaari had gotten what she wanted. All the pieces of the Dragon Gem — the last dragon magic in the world — were right here in her hands. She looked up and saw an exit.

She raised the Gem pieces, trying to drive the  Druun back long enough to make her escape.

But as she did, her eyes fell again on the group of friends — and on Raya’s face. Namaari saw something there she hadn’t noticed before. Raya reminded her of Sisu. The first time Namaari had seen Sisu, the dragon had given her a look full of compassion. And hope. And trust.

Namaari dropped to her knees on the ground. Hurriedly, she tried to puzzle together the broken pieces. The glow inside each fragment was now no more than a faint glimmer.

Finally, she fit the pieces in place. At once, they fused together. The Dragon Gem was whole again.

Namaari placed a hand on Raya’s shoulder as a Druun washed over her.

Moments later, the light within the Dragon Gem died.
