A ballet program set up in a small town in Hebei province's rural hinterland is encouraging young dancers to broaden their horizons and ambitions.
Guan Yu, the ballet instructor, is also the deputy director of the ballet department at the Beijing Dance Academy.

In 2012, at the invitation of the art charity Hefeng Foundation, Guan Yu set up the ballet course for the first time in Duancun to offer children a chance to appreciate the artistic dance form.

Asked when things really started to change, most parents agree it was in 2016 when young local Ma Yue received her admission notice to the Liaoning Ballet - making her the first in the group of girls to "go out" of the countryside.
Ma Yue's dance costumes are still on display in glass cabinets in the lobby of the science and technology building at the school. Her father recalls that the whole family went crazy at that time. And many parents considered enrolling their children in arts courses as a career move, rather than just as a hobby.
While once the winding road stretching out in front of these girls crossed the moors and reached as far the hills, they now know that it continues on to distant places they can one day visit.
