There's no need even to have a college degree.

But there is a requirement of evidence of exceptional ability

then one should overcome the fear and just do it anyway.

First principle which is really the only way forward

It doesn't have to change the world

Try to be useful here, doing something that is useful to the rest of society.

Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.
