World's favorite book genres revealed

Reading habits look different around the world, and what people choose to read varies depending on their geographic location. A study in Switzerland looked at international Google search records to determine the most popular book genres in countries where data was available.

According to search trends, American readers prefer the classics to other popular categories. Book lovers in New Zealand and Ireland are also searching for older books that tend to be taught in literature classes. In Latin America, horror and romance are the most popular genres. Scary books dominate in Mexico and Argentina, and love stories win over readers in Brazil. The two genres tie for the No 1 spot in Venezuela. Fantasy is another popular genre read around the world, coming out on top in Italy, Germany and Poland. India, home to the world's most voracious readers, gravitates toward poetry.

Tiny 'flower' formation spotted on Mars

During its ongoing investigation of Martian rocks in Gale Crater, the Curiosity rover stumbled on a tiny surprise. The rock artifact, which resembles a piece of coral or a flower, is smaller than a penny.

The Martian "flower" and the spherical pieces next to it were likely "made in the ancient past when minerals carried by water cemented the rock," according to NASA. Curiosity took an image of the rock arrangement on Feb 24 using the Mars Hand Lens Imager, a camera located on the end of its robotic arm.

Florida Gov berates students for wearing masks

A visibly annoyed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis admonished a group of high school students for wearing face masks at an indoor news conference on March 2, saying it was time to stop what he called “this COVID theater.” The Republican governor approached the students and asked them to remove their masks as they waited for him at the press event at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The college is located in an area where the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommend indoor masking due to high COVID-19 risk. “You do not have to wear those masks. I mean, please take them off. Honestly, it’s not doing anything. We’ve got to stop with this COVID theater. So if you wanna wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous,” he said, letting out an audible sigh and shaking his head. DeSantis, a fierce opponent of masking and vaccine mandates, is running for reelection and considered a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate.

Companies with female leaders outperform those dominated by men

Women should play a central role in the post-pandemic economic recovery, with evidence revealing companies with more female leaders outperform those dominated by men according to House of Commons research. To mark International Women’s Day, Labour have collated data from the House of Commons library.

It cited McKinsey research showing companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25 percent more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the bottom, while companies with more than 30 percent female executives were more likely to outperform companies that don’t, according to research from academics from the Universities of Glasgow and Leicester.
