Welcome to The Coolest Games. Today, we’re talking about figure skating, one of the most popular sports at the Winter Olympics.

One could argue that figure skating is synonymous with the Winter Olympic Games themselves. Two Americans are responsible for the major developments in the history of the sport. In 1850, Edward Bushnell of Philadelphia revolutionized skating when he introduced steel-bladed skates allowing complex maneuvers and turns. Jackson Haines, a ballet master in the 1860s, added elements of ballet and dance to give the sport its grace.

有人可能会说，花样滑冰这项运动本身就是冬奥会的代名词。纵观其历史，两位美国人对这项运动的发展作出了巨大贡献。1850 年，来自费城的爱德华·布什内尔（Edward Bushnell）引入了能够驾驭复杂动作和转弯的钢刃溜冰鞋，从而彻底改变了滑冰运动；19世纪60年代，芭蕾舞大师杰克逊·海恩斯 (Jackson Haines) 将芭蕾舞蹈元素融入滑冰技术，实现了滑冰运动与舞蹈艺术的结合。

The first Olympic competition in figure skating was actually during the Summer Games, first in London in 1908, then in the 1920 summer games in Antwerp. The sport was permanently transferred to the Winter Olympics, first held in 1924 in Chamonix, France.

第一届花样滑冰比赛实际上是在夏季奥运会期间，首次于1908年伦敦奥运会亮相，接着也出现在1920年安特卫普夏季奥运会上。在这之后，花样滑冰就被长期纳入了冬季奥运会的比赛项目中，于1924年在法国夏蒙尼首次举行。

The figure skating competition is one of the fiercest at the Winter Olympics - one slight error, and a competitor's chances of a medal goes up in smoke. To win gold, you have to be flawless. 

花样滑冰比赛可谓是冬奥会上最激烈的比赛项目之一。哪怕是一个小失误，选手获得奖牌的机会就烟消云散了。因此为了勇夺金牌，运动员必须做到完美无瑕。

Each event typically consists of a short and long routine that helps determine a competitor's score. Within each routine, a skater receives two sets of scores: the technical element score and the program component score.

花样滑冰项目通常由一个短节目和长节目构成，这有助于评定选手的分数。在每组节目中，滑冰选手会获得两组分数：技术分和节目内容分。

The program component score is based primarily on presentation, while the technical element score evaluates the difficulty and completion of the routine. The short routine acts as a qualifier - only the top-scoring skaters from this portion of the competition advance to the long or free program. Skaters then receive a combined score from the short and free programs to find the overall winner.

节目内容分的评定主要基于选手的表演，而技术分则根据节目的难度和完成度来评估。短节目作为预选赛，只有在这项比赛中得分最高的选手才能进入长节目或自由滑节目。然后，滑冰者从短节目和自由滑中得到一个综合分数，来争夺冠军。

During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the figure skating competition will take place at Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. There are five events in the figure skating competition - men's individual, women's individual, pairs, ice dancing and the team event.

2022年北京冬奥会期间，花样滑冰比赛将在北京首都体育馆举行。该比赛分为五个项目，分别是：男子个人、女子个人、双人滑、冰舞和团体赛。

Japan’s Hanyu Yuzuru won the gold in Sochi in 2014 and PyeongChang in 2018 in the men's singles. The two-time Olympic champion, considered to be one of the greatest male figure skaters in history, will surely be the man to beat in Beijing as he looks for a third consecutive men’s singles title, a feat not achieved since 1928.

两届奥运会冠军的日本选手羽生结弦被认为是史上最伟大的男子花样滑冰运动员之一。他在2014 年的索契冬奥会和2018年平昌的冬奥会上均获得了男子单人滑的金牌。 在这届北京冬奥会上，他必将载入史册。因为羽生结弦将冲击男子单人滑的三连冠，而自1928年以来还从未有人实现过这一壮举。

Now here is something fun about the competition. Do you often see spectators throwing stuffed animals in the skating rink? Well, giving figure skaters stuffed animals is a proper affair. After fans throw their stuffed animals, young boys and girls known as "sweepers" or "pixies" rush onto the ice and start picking those toys up one by one. The kids can't keep the stuffed animals because they're gifts from fans for the skaters, but they do get the exhilarating taste of being on the ice in front of thousands of people.
