Hello this is Jane Goodall, and this is an entry from the Guinness book of records. It recognizes the wild chimpanzee research at Gombe national park as one of the two longest-running continuous studies of primates.
During this study, we've come to understand the complex behavior of these close relatives of ours, and we're still learning. Back in the 1960s, science maintained that there was a sharp line, dividing us from all other animals.
Because of our close genetic similarity with chimpanzees, the composition of our DNA and theirs differs by only just over one percent. And because of striking similarities in social behavior, it's now accepted that we are a part of and not separated from the rest of the animal kingdom.
Sadly, chimpanzee populations around Africa as well as those of many other species are under great threat due to habitat loss, the bush meat trade, wildlife trafficking, the growth of human populations and climate change.
But by working with the often very poor human communities, living in and around chimpanzee habitats, helping them find ways to improve their lives without destroying the forest for a better future for their own children as well as those of the chimpanzees and other wildlife.
And now these people have become our partners in conservation. And I invite everyone to join us in celebration as we work towards a hopeful future for our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. Thank you!
