    Cloth made out of silk is shiny and smooth. It costs a lot of money.  This is because it takes so much work to care for the tiny worms that make silk fibers and also because each worm makes such a small amount of silk.

    Silkworms are kept on trays in warm rooms where there are a lot of chopped mulberry leaves for them to eat. The workers are kept busy because silkworms eat all the time, night and day.

    How would you like to be a waitress to a worm?

    When it is full grown, the silkworm wraps itself in thin silk fibers that come out of its head. This silk wrapping is called a cocoon, and it is from this cocoon that silk thread is made.
