Facebook has just announced it's going to hire 10,000 people in Europe to develop the "metaverse". This is a concept which is being talked up by some as the future of the internet. 

To the outsider, it may look like a souped-up version of Virtual Reality (VR) - but some people think the metaverse could be the future of the internet.

In fact, the belief is that it could be to VR what the modern smartphone is to the first clunky mobile phones of the 1980s.

▍语言点 

1. metaverse /ˈmetəvɜːrs/ n. 元宇宙(虚拟的人类现实世界)

· 构词：meta-元、超越，verse-宇宙

2. talk up 夸大(If someone talks up a particular thing, they make it sound more interesting, valuable, or likely than it originally seemed.) 

· If we talk up the event, people will come.

如果我们把这事好好宣传一下，一定会有人来的。

3. souped-up adj. 加了马力的，增强的

· soup up 加马力(improve something, especially a car, by making it more powerful)

· a souped-up version 升级版，增强版 

· a souped-up version of iPhone 升级版的iPhone

4. 句型A is to B what C is to D ：A对于B就像C对于D一样，A和B的关系就好比C和D的关系

· 注：what是为了连接前后的对比，意思是“恰如、好像、相当于”

· Oxygen is to the human beings what water is to the fish．

氧气对于人类就像水对于鱼一样重要。

· Reading is to the mind what food is to the body.
