剧情回顾：罗密欧和朱丽叶已许下爱情誓言。第二天，罗密欧来到修道院。

修道院

劳伦斯修士带着篮子登场

Enter Friar Laurence alone with a basket

劳伦斯修士

灰暗的黎明向皱眉的暗夜微笑，

曙光给东方的云彩画上金边，

斑驳的阴云像步履蹒跚的醉汉，

被泰坦神的炙热火轮追得四处逃散：

The grey-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night,

Check’ring the eastern clouds with streaks of light,

And fleckled darkness like a drunkard reels

From forth day’s path and Titan’s burning wheels:

我要在太阳尚未完全睁开他的火眼，

欢快地晒干昨夜的甘露之前，

采集这汁液丰盈的鲜花和毒草。

大地是众生之母，也是众生之墓；

是万物葬身的乱坟，也是孕育万物的子宫。

大地孕育出形形色色的婴孩，

伏在自然的怀抱中吮吸、生长。

Now, ere the sun advance his burning eye,

The day to cheer and night’s dank dew to dry,

I must upfill this osier cage of ours

With baleful weeds and precious-juicèd flowers.

The earth that’s nature’s mother is her tomb:

What is her burying grave, that is her womb,

And from her womb children of divers kind

We sucking on her natural bosom find:

许多生物生性优良，

各有其秒，互不相同。

啊，那一草一木一石的天然本性，

都蕴涵着无穷的神奇能量：

没有什么东西会低贱到

对世间毫无价值，

可又没有一个物种尽善尽美，

如果使用不善，必会招来祸端。

美德若被误用，便会变成罪恶，

相反，若能巧用罪恶，偶尔也会结下善果。

Many for many virtues excellent,

None but for some and yet all different.

O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies

In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities:

For nought so vile that on the earth doth live

But to the earth some special good doth give,

Nor aught so good but strained from that fair use

Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.

Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied,

And vice sometime by action dignified.

Enter Romeo

这看似柔弱的花蕾，

饱含毒素，却又有治疗功效：

闻一下，香气贯穿全身，养气提神，

尝一口，毒素麻痹五官，直达心脏。

情同此理，世道人心与草木药性一样，

善良与邪恶此消彼长。

一旦邪恶占了上风，

死亡将很快吞噬一切。

Within the infant rind of this weak flower

Poison hath residence and medicine power:

For this, being smelt, with that part cheers each part,

Being tasted, slays all senses with the heart.

Two such opposèd kings encamp them still

In man as well as herbs, grace and rude will:

And where the worser is predominant,

Full soon the canker death eats up that plant.

Good morrow, father.

With Rosaline, my ghostly father? No,

I have forgot that name, and that name’s woe.

That’s my good son: but where hast thou been, then?

我把一切都告诉您：

昨天的晚宴，我与我的仇敌在一起，

忽然间，有一个人使我受了伤，那人也被我击中：

要想治愈我俩，全靠您的灵丹妙药。

其实，我对仇敌毫无怨恨，神父，

我来找您，对我的仇人也有所帮助。

I’ll tell thee ere thou ask it me again:

I have been feasting with mine enemy,

Where on a sudden one hath wounded me,

That’s by me wounded: both our remedies

Within thy help and holy physic lies.

I bear no hatred, blessèd man, for lo,

My intercession likewise steads my foe.

好孩子，含糊的忏悔只能得到含糊的恕罪，有话请直说。

Be plain, good son, rest homely in thy drift,

Riddling confession finds but riddling shrift.

罗密欧

我恋爱了，我对凯普莱特家的女儿一见钟情：

至于我们何时何地，如何相识，又如何交换誓言，

Then plainly know my heart’s dear love is set

On the fair daughter of rich Capulet:

As mine on hers, so hers is set on mine;

And all combined, save what thou must combine

By holy marriage. When and where and how

We met, we wooed and made exchange of vow,

I’ll tell thee as we pass, but this I pray,

That thou consent to marry us today.

Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here!

太阳还没来得及驱散你发向上天的哀叹，

你痛苦的呻吟还在我的耳畔回响：

看，此时你脸上还残留着昨日的泪痕。

如果你没变心，那这些忧愁还可以属于你。

你和你的忧愁，都属于罗瑟琳。

难道，你变了心？有句老话说的好:

男人要是没持久力，女人也会轻易变心。

The sun not yet thy sighs from heaven clears,

Thy old groans yet ringing in my ancient ears:

If e’er thou wast thyself and these woes thine,

Thou and these woes were all for Rosaline.

And art thou changed? Pronounce this sentence then:

Not in a grave,

To lay one in, another out to have.

罗密欧

请您别说我了，我现在面对的是一份真挚的感情：

跟原来那个不一样。

I pray thee, chide me not. Her I love now

Doth grace for grace and love for love allow:

The other did not so.

劳伦斯修士

啊，哈哈，要我看，那罗瑟琳心里很清楚，

你爱她的方式，不过是在背诵一些陈词滥调。

无论如何，摇摆不定的年轻人，来吧，
