1. Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it.

从前，有个女儿向父亲抱怨说，她的生活很悲惨，她不知道如何才能活下去。

2. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time.

她厌倦了一直打拼和挣扎。

3. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

似乎一个问题刚解决，另一个问题又接踵而至。

4. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.

她的父亲是个厨师，他把她带到厨房。他在三个锅里分别装满了水，放在高温的火上。

5. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

当三口锅开始沸腾时，他把土豆放进一个锅里，把鸡蛋放进第二个锅里，把磨碎的咖啡豆放进第三个锅里。

6. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter.

8. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners.

12. Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”
