凯普莱特夫人

奶妈，我女儿在哪儿？喊她来见我。

Nurse, where’s my daughter? Call her forth to me.

奶妈

我以我12岁的童贞发誓，已经喊过她了。

喂，小羊羔！喂，小瓢虫！

这孩子哪儿去了？喂，朱丽叶！

Now by my maidenhead at twelve year old,

I bade her come. What, Iamb! What, ladybird!

God forbid, where’s this girl? What, Juliet!

谁叫我，什么事？

How now? Who calls?

奶妈

你妈妈叫你。

朱丽叶

妈，我来了，有什么事？

Madam, I am here. What is your will?

凯普莱特夫人

嗯，事情是这样的。奶妈，你回避一下。

呃，还是回来吧；你也该听听

你知道，我女儿长大了。

This is the matter.— Nurse, give leave awhile,

We must talk in secret.— Nurse, come back again,

I have remembered me, thou’s hear our counsel.

Thou know’st my daughter’s of a pretty age.

奶妈

那还用说，她的年龄，我能按小时算出来。

Faith, I can tell her age unto an hour.

凯普莱特夫人

她还不满十四岁。

She’s not fourteen.

奶妈

我要以我的十四颗牙齿发誓。哎，说起来伤心，我只剩下四颗牙了。她的确还不到十四岁。现在离8月1日收获节还有多久？

I’ll lay fourteen of my teeth — and yet, to my teen be it spoken, I have but four — she’s not fourteen. How long is it now to Lammas-tide?

凯普莱特夫人

两个星期多一些。

A fortnight and odd days.

奶妈

不管多一天，还是两天，到收获节前夜，她就十四岁了。我女儿苏珊跟她同岁。愿上帝安息所有基督徒的灵魂！唉，这会儿我女儿与上帝同在了。都是因为该死的大地震。苏珊，我女儿，多好的孩子，可惜我命里没有她。还是说回“收获节”前夜，我发誓，到时候，她就要满十四岁了。

Even or odd, of all days in the year, come Lammas Eve at night shall she be fourteen. Susan and she — God rest all Christian souls! — were of an age. Well, Susan is with God: she was too good for me. But as I said, on Lammas Eve at night shall she be fourteen, that shall she, marry, I remember it well. 

眼下，大地震过去十一年了，我永远也忘不了那一天，不早不晚，朱丽叶就是那天断奶的；我把苦艾涂在奶头上，坐在鸽子房的墙下晒太阳；当时老爷跟您都在曼图亚。瞧，我记性还不差吧。可当这可爱的小傻瓜尝到奶头变苦了，就对着奶头发脾气，一下子甩开小嘴。这时，鸽子房摇晃起来，不用人赶，我撒腿就跑。

掐指一算，大地震过去十一年了。那时她已能自个儿走路；我敢发誓，她能晃晃悠悠地走了；因为就在地震前一天，朱丽叶摔了一跤，磕破了额头，这时候我丈夫——说到我丈夫，哎，此刻上帝与他的灵魂同在！我丈夫呢，他爱开玩笑，把孩子抱起来说，“哎呀，你是向前扑倒的吗？等你长大成熟了，就该反过来，面朝上躺了；是不是呀，朱丽？”哎呦，我的圣母，一听这话，可爱的小东西居然不哭了，说“是的。”

And since that time it is eleven years, for then she could stand alone, nay, by th’rood, she could have run and waddled all about, for even the day before, she broke her brow, and then my husband — God be with his soul, a was a merry man — took up the child, ‘Yea,’ quoth he, ‘dost thou fall upon thy face? Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit, wilt thou not, Jule?’ And by my holidam, the pretty wretch left crying and said ‘Ay’.

奶妈

好的，夫人。可我一想到这件事，就忍不住想笑。不过，说真的，当时她额头上肿起一个包，那一下撞得好险，她痛得大哭。我丈夫说：“哎呀，等你到了年龄，就会躺在男人下面了。是不是呀，朱丽叶？”她马上不哭了，说：“是的”。

Yes, madam, yet I cannot choose but laugh, to think it should leave crying and say ‘Ay’. And yet I warrant it had upon it brow a bump as big as a young cock’rel’s stone, a perilous knock, and it cried bitterly. ‘Yea,’ quoth my husband, ‘fall’st upon thy face? Thou wilt fall backward when thou comest to age, wilt thou not, Jule?’ It stinted and said ‘Ay’.

我说，奶妈，请你也打住！

And stint thou too, I pray thee, Nurse, say I.

奶妈

不说了，也说完了。愿上帝格外保佑你！在我奶过的孩子里，你最漂亮。我要是能活着看见你出嫁一次，就心满意足喽。

Peace, I have done. God mark thee to his grace! Thou wast the prettiest babe that e’er I nursed. An I might live to see thee married once, I have my wish.

凯普莱特夫人

出嫁，是呀，我来正是要谈她的婚事。

朱丽叶，我的女儿，你对自己的婚姻有什么想法？

Marry, that ‘marry’ is the very theme

I came to talk of. Tell me, daughter Juliet,

How stands your disposition to be married?

朱丽叶

婚姻是一件我做梦也没梦过的荣誉。

It is an honour that I dream not of.

奶妈

An honour! Were not I thine only nurse, I would say thou hadst sucked wisdom from thy teat.

Well, think of marriage now: younger than you,

That you are now a maid. Thus then in brief:

The valiant Paris seeks you for his love.

仆人

夫人，客人陆陆续续都来了，晚宴已就绪，大家都在等您和小姐呢。奶妈也不说去厨房帮把手，乱糟糟的，大家在埋怨。我要去伺候客人了；请您二位马上来。

Madam, the guests are come, supper served up, you called, my young lady asked for, the nurse cursed in the pantry, and everything in extremity. I must hence to wait: I beseech you, follow straight.

这就来。—朱丽叶，那伯爵帕里斯正等你呢。

We follow thee.— Juliet, the county stays.

奶妈

抓住机会，孩子，要白天、夜里都享福，我们先走了。

Go, girl, seek happy nights to happy days.
