Hello.  I am Miss Janice, an educator and lover of life!  I enjoyed my 21 years in China, and am back in the US now sharing my US experiences with you.

My mother grew up on a ranch in Gillette, Wyoming.  My grandparents moved to Wyoming in the early 1900’s, where they became ranchers.My Grandfather took a train out to Wyoming with his family, and my Grandmother went out west in a covered wagon with her family.

We spent all of our summers out visiting my mother’s family when I was growing up.It was a perfect, idyllic childhood!

This past week I went to visit my cousin, Patty Ann, in Rawlins, Wyoming.She is one of my dearest friends, and she came to help teach in Shanghai for my first year at Rainbow Bridge International School, when we were in need of an excellent teacher.When we are together we laugh a lot, which means that I had lots of fun!

We visited the county fair, local businesses, toured the city, went house hunting, went to have lunch in nearby Sarasota, drove through an oil town, Sinclair, and met with many of her friends.I was there for just over 3 days.It was so enjoyable, and so relaxing.

Wyoming is known as the Cowboy state.There are cattle, horses, and sheep.Rawlins was founded in 1869.The continental divide runs through Rawlins.It starts in Alaska, runs through Canada, down through the US, through Mexico, all the way down to the Andes Mountains in South America!People hike along this trail, and often stop in Rawlins.

Rawlins, Wyoming, is a very small town as far as population is concerned, and it is 8.24 square miles big, which is around 21.2 square kilometers.Around the same size as Macau.The difference is that Macau has a population of around 660,000 people and Rawlins has a population of less than 10,000 people.That’s it—less than yi wan!!!!!!Wow!

This is small town America, and I love it!It is surrounded by the Red Desert and the San Padre Mountain Range.It haslow humidity, around 15%.It is very windy.It gets snow between the middle of November and the end of May each year, with an average of 41.5 inches, or 105 cm of snow each year!During that time it is very, very cold!

The people in Rawlins are are hard working, and they speak their minds.They also enjoy their lives. On the weekends they tend to be a recreational community—they go camping, fishing, horse back riding, exploring, boating, cycling, snowmobiling, and more.On Saturdays the downtown is very empty!

The city is completing a beautiful renovation project to its downtown businesses, trying to bring back some of the original charm of the city.I took pictures of the downtown at around 10:00 am last Saturday morning.You can see that the businesses are just two stories high, and that they are quite charming.You can also see that the town was quite empty!There is a tribute to the original Railway station, and to the sheep.There is a small very cool museum hidden underneath the railroad crossing, for the trekkers who hike the continental divide.The downtown now has murals on many of its buildings, painted by local artists.During the winter the downtown park is turned into an ice skating rink for the community.

The State penitentiary is also in Rawlins; it is the building that is over 3 stories tall, and is a big employer in the area.

In some of the pictures you can see the deer roam the streets..There is a picture of a mother deer and her three baby fawns, and In another picture you can see two bucks, the male deer, with their beautiful horns, which are c antlers, resting in the downtown park.

Saratoga has a renovated downtown, and natural hot springs, that have been a draw to the area for years.We used to go there each summer when I was growing up to enjoy the hot pools and therapeutic waters.

Small town America is truly beautiful.The drive from Boise, Idaho to Rawlins took just 9 hours.
