Message by Theresa May on Joining Aldersgate Group
Tackling climate change and the degradation of nature are the greatest challenges of our time. Acting now and with urgency is essential to protect our valued landscapes and species and support our economic prosperity and wellbeing.
The task ahead is changing. It will require major investments in modern green infrastructure and we will need to change the way we live and do business.
But it also comes with huge opportunities. Moving to net-zero emissions and restoring the health of our natural environment can drive innovation, cut the cost of new technologies, development new supply chains, create jobs across the country, and make our economy more resilient.
We’ve already shown in the UK that you don’t have to choose between lower emissions and higher economic growth; since 1990, we have cut our emissions by 40% and our GDP has grown by 78%. As Prime Minister, I led the UK to be the first major economy to enshrine a net-zero emissions target into law and published a strategy to overturn the decline in nature within a generation.
But legislation alone isn’t enough. We now need to put in place the solutions to get there and do this in a way that delivers benefits to our economy and to people across the country. That’s why I’m joining the Aldersgate Group, which brings together some of the UK’s largest businesses from across the economy, as well as leading NGOs, professional institutes, and academic institutions. Together, we will champion the business case for decarbonising the UK economy, improving resource efficiency and investing in the natural environment.
Because standing by is not an option. The UK led the world in innovation during the Industrial Revolution and now we must lead the world to a cleaner, greener form of growth and protect our planet for the future.
