Tonight's Bedtime Story is all about a super villain. This guy is really naughty, very cheeky and bright green, but never fear, because where there's trouble, a superhero is sure to follow.

今晚睡前故事的主角的一个超级大反派。这是一个绿油油的小家伙，十分淘气，非常顽皮。不过别怕，每当麻烦找上门，自有超级英雄来救场。

The story is called “Supertato”, and it's by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. Some vegetables are frozen for a very good reason. Don't believe me? Then keep reading.

这个故事叫做《土豆超人》，其作者是苏·亨德拉（Sue Hendra）和保罗·林内特（Paul Lynette）。有的蔬菜应该冷藏，你信不信呢？请往下看。

It was night-time in the supermarket and all was quiet. But crash, bang! Something had escaped from the freezer. Something small and round and green. Something looking for trouble, big trouble.

夜幕降临，超市里万籁俱静。忽然“砰”的一声，有东西逃出了冰柜。是一个小小的、圆滚滚的、绿油油的家伙，它想捣乱，想制造大麻烦。

“Help, help!” cried Carrot. “I'm stuck to the conveyor belt.”“Ugh…” cried Broccoli. “Someone's drawn on my face.” “Mmph! Mmph… ” cried Cucumber.

胡萝卜惊呼：“救命啊，救命啊！我被粘在传送带上了。”花椰菜大叫了一声：“啊！有人在我脸上乱涂乱画。”“呜呜呜…”黄瓜支支吾吾地说不出话。

Who was doing this, and was there anyone who could help these vegetables in distress? Supertato to the rescue. He used his super-speed. He used his super-strength. He used a flannel and some soapy water.

是谁在捣乱？谁来救救这些深陷困境的蔬菜呢？这时土豆挺身而出。他开启过人的神速，发挥超强的神力，巧用面巾和肥皂水。

“I know who's behind this,” said Supertato,“there's a pea on the loose.”“Oh, no! Not a pea!” everyone gasped.

然后他说道：“我知道是谁在这背后捣乱，一颗在窜逃的豌豆。”“哦！不是吧！豌豆吗！”众菜惊叹道。

“Yes, a pea.” “But I'm out of the freezer now and I'm never going back! Aha…”

“对，我就是豌豆。既然我现在逃出了冰柜，就休想再让我回去了！哈哈……”

And the evil pea ran off to commit more terrible crimes. “Time for a dip, little veggies.”“Now, that's enough!” shouted Supertato. He leapt towards the pea, but the pea popped out of his hands and vanished into thin air.

这颗邪恶的豌豆迅速逃离，继续作乱。“下锅洗澡吧，各位菜菜子。”“够了，给我住手！”土豆超人高呼。话音刚落他就扑向豌豆，但豌豆逃出了他的手心，转眼就消失不见了。

Supertato set out on a super-search. He crept through the cakes, he checked the cheese, he snuck up on the beans. And then, something caught his eye.

土豆超人开启超级搜索模式，他轻轻走过糕点区，一一检查所有奶酪，偷偷走近豆类柜台。然后，他突然间有所发现。

“The game's up!” yelled Supertato. But the pea bounced out of reach and onto a trolley. Supertato was just about to stop him with his super-strength when the trolley crashed and he was thrown down into the icy depths of the freezer.

土豆超人大声喝道：“束手就擒吧！”但没想到豌豆竟然闪身逃脱，跳到了购物车上。土豆超人想用神力竭力阻拦豌豆，但购物车却突然翻倒，正好撞到土豆，土豆掉进了冰柜底部。

Was this the end of Supertato? Not quite. But the pea was off his trolley and lying in wait. “You're finished, Supertato!” he shrieked. But Supertato summoned upall his strength and ran for it.

难道土豆超人就这样牺牲了吗？那倒不至于。但是豌豆已经跳下购物车，默默潜伏准备出击。“你完蛋了，土豆超人。”豌豆高呼。但土豆超人使出浑身解数，奋力逃脱。

The pea nearly had him at the beans and closed in on him at the cheese. He had him cornered at the cakes. “So much for Supertato!” screech the pea, “You're about to be MASHED potato!”

豌豆在豆类柜台差点抓到土豆超人，在奶酪去也险些得手，土豆超人在糕点区被追得走投无路。于是豌豆高声嘲笑：“土豆超人也不过如此嘛！我马上要把土豆超人变成土豆泥了！”

Surely this was the end for Supertato. “Not today, my friend,” said Supertato. “Gotcha!”“Mmps…” said the pea. “Oh, yes,” said Supertato. “I set my trap and you fell for it. Or should that be in it?” And he grinned a super grin.

显然，这次土豆超人危在旦夕。“没那么容易，兄弟”土豆超人说道。“可算逮着你了！”“咳咳”土豆呜咽着。“哦，这就对了”，土豆超人说，“你这是中了我的圈套，或者应该说，你掉进了我的陷阱。”说完土豆超人露出了闪亮的微笑。

Supertato had saved the day. “Take him away,” he said, and pea was marched back to the freezer where he belonged. “This jelly tastes of pea,” said Broccoli, and everybody laughed and cheered.

土豆超人成功拯救了大家。“把它带走吧”土豆超人说。于是豌豆被大家押送回冰柜，继续冷藏。西兰花说：“这个果冻怎么有股豌豆味。”蔬菜们欢呼雀跃，哄笑一堂。

So remember, folks, some vegetables are frozen for a very good reason. Maybe you'd better go and check your freezer… just in case there's an “escapee” in your house.

所以大家要记住哦，有些蔬菜是应该冷藏的。或许你应该检查一下你家的冰箱，以防家中有冰箱的“逃犯”。

Wow! That little pea caused a lot of mayhem, but luckily Supertato was there to save the day. And now it's time for you to go to sleep. Perhaps you'll dream of mischievous villains or brave superheroes tonight.

哇哦！那颗小豌豆可真是惹了不少麻烦，所幸土豆超人及时挺身而出，拯救了大家。现在你该睡觉啦，说不定你今晚会梦到淘气的反派或者勇敢的超级英雄哦。

Notes:

villain

a) a character in a book, play, film, etc. who harms other people 反面人物；反派角色

He made his reputation as an actor playing villains. 

他靠演反派角色而出了名。

b) something or someone considered harmful or dangerous 首要危险；祸首

We've always been told that cholesterol was a major cause of heart disease but, actually, saturated fat is the worst villain.

我们一直被告知胆固醇是导致心脏病的主要原因，可实际上饱和脂肪才是罪魁祸首。

on the loose （同 be at large)

If a dangerous person or animal is on the loose, that person or animal is free to move around a place and harm people.（危险分子）在逃，未受管制

Brewer escaped from prison last year and has been on the loose ever since.

布鲁尔自去年越狱后一直在逃。

be at large 

If someone dangerous is at large, that person is free when they should not be. 逍遥法外，尚未捉拿归案

Twelve prisoners are at large following a series of escapes. 

一连串的越狱事件发生后，12名犯人目前依然逍遥法外。

in distress

a) very upset 非常沮丧、痛苦

He was clearly in distress upon hearing the news.

听到这个消息，他显然十分痛苦。

b) in a very difficult situation; introuble 在困境中

She's devoted her life to helping those in distress.

summon (up)

to increase your courage or strength, especially with an effort （尤指努力地）鼓起（勇气），积聚（力气）

It took me six months to summon (up) the courage to ask him out for a drink.

because of a possibility of something happening, being needed, etc. 以防万一

I don't think I'll need any money but I'll bring some just in case.
