Yangyang, on Ximalaya,asked me about patrioticeducation, 爱国教育。

洋洋，我们喜马拉雅上的朋友，问了我关爱国教育的话题。

Igrew up in Texas. Every morning, in school, we had to stand up, putour hand over our heart, look at the American flag, and say thepledge of allegiance. Then, we had to look at the Texas flag and saythe Texas pledge of allegiance. That’s right! We pledged to theAmerican flag AND the Texas flag!

我在得克萨斯州长大了。每天早上在学校里都要站起来，把手放在胸口上，望着美国国旗，念效忠誓词。然后我们就要望着得州的州旗念得州效忠誓词。没错！我们要对着美国国旗和得州州旗都要念誓词！

Texasis unusual, though. Most states don’t make their students pledge tothe state flag. But I think all students do have to pledge to theAmerican flag. We also have to take classes about American historyand Texas history. We took classes about how the American governmentworks, too, but these aren’t patriotism classes. What’sthe difference? Well, a history class gives youinformation, but a patriotism class tells you what to feel.

得州有点特殊，大部分州不会让同学们念州效忠誓词。可是应该是所有学生都要对着国旗念。我们也要上美国历史课和得州历史课，还有针对美国政府的课，可是这些还不算爱国教育。区别在哪呢？历史课会给你传达信息，爱国课会给你转达一种感觉。

Rightnow in the USA, many people want schools to start teaching patriotismclasses. I’m not sure it’s a good idea. There are a lot of greatthings about my country, but there are many problems too. If we don’ttalk about our problems, we can’t fix them. Also,I believe that people are more important than countries. Countriesare just tools to make our lives better. We need classes to learn howto use our tools, but I don’t think we need classes to tell us thatwe should love our tools.

现在有些美国人想让美国学校也较爱国课。我不一定觉得这是个好主意。我国有很多很棒的方面，可是还有很多问题。不聊聊问题的话就没法解决。还有，我坚信人比国重要。一个国家是一个为人谋福利的工具。我们要学如何合理地利用我们的工具，可是我觉不一定需要被教育我们应该爱一个工具。
