Recently, the first season of the science-inspired anime, Cells at Work!, introduced and dubbed by CCTV 6, has come to an end. In the last episode, the red blood cells brought in to save a body suffering from "blood loss shock", attracted attention on social media because of their distinctive northeastern Chinese accents.

An anthropomorphic approach to the cells of the human body

The human body is home to some 37 trillion 200 billion cells of all kinds, including red blood cells that carry oxygen and white blood cells that fight bacteria. They work, energetically, every minute of every day to support the body. But, when the body becomes the world and the cells become the people, what stories will result?

Cells at Work! tells these stories.

According to the Japan-based newspaper, Orient Shinbun, Cells at Work! is a manga by mangaka Akane Shimizu, which was adapted into a popular Japanese anime in 2018. Cells at Work! has steadily gained attention in China over the last few years, and in 2019 it won the prestigious "White Magnolia Award" for best screenplay in the Chinese film and television industry.

Are you kind to your body?

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the broadcast of Cells at Work! even more relevant. People from all around the world have become more concerned about health and disease. This anime provides timely knowledge on immunization and disease prevention in a way that’s easy to understand.

In addition, while the Chinese dubbed version of Cells at Work! hit the screens, the spin-off anime, Cells at Work! Black, was also released. Unlike the positive tone of the first season, Black's "darker" story takes place in an unhealthy world caused by drinking, smoking, stress and lack of sleep. The cells' lives are full of cruelty and exhaustion.

Fans of the show are highly invested in the characters and get upset when they don’t take care of their bodies. Ironically, these same fans deprive themselves of sleep in order to watch these episodes, effectively harming their own bodies. Anime viewers would do well to take their own advice and take care of their own bodies, too.

On Chinese social media, netizens have commented on Cells at Work!.
