老外说——四海为家的性格和星座有关吗？

What is your star sign, by the way?

Gemini (双子座). I was talking with my friend who's a physicist. He's an academic physicist, and he is written papers on stars, and made some discoveries. I don't really understand it, if he tries to explain it, but he's very smart and he was trying to explain to me how, not just your star sign, but like the alignments (排列) of the planets and stars. It's a very imperfect way to find out about somebody, but he says if you think about it as like an archetype of a god, or something like that, based on how all these different things are aligned, then you can predict some things about a person. He said it's about as useful as Myers Briggs— the four sides of the mind. So, for example, I’m INTP.

No, I don't know about it. I didn't really delve (探究) deep into the whole star sign thing, but…

This is psychology. Are you introverted (内向的)? Extroverted (外向的)? Are you censor (审查官) or do I think it's sensing or intuition? Thinking or feeling and then perceiver (感知者) or judger (评判者)? So there's 16 possible types. Anyway, you can take a test or something if you want.

It's called Myers–Brig?

Myers–Briggs. Sometimes called the four sides of the mind. I think it's based largely based on Carl Jung.

Back to the whole traveling thing. How do your parents say about this?

I think they are a little bit concerned about my career. I think they seemed more concerned in the past. After two years, they were saying, what do you want to do? They bought books for me about choosing your career. Their mindset is more typical. They paid for me to go to college. They want me to have a good job, afford a home. Live life the way they did. And that's fine.

I think they're getting used to the idea that I'm not gonna just move back and get a regular job. But my mom was still, even when I was in Taiwan, she was trying to tell me ‘oh, GE is moving to Boston. John, you could get a job with GE. I can get lots of jobs. I'm an artist. Sort of. I draw. I'm an artist type. I like drawing. I have that mentality (心态). My relationship. The music is different.

Our conversation somehow reminded me of a movie. I don't know whether you have watched it or not. It’s called Into the Wild (《荒野生存》).

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to. I haven't watched it yet.

I think it's an Oscar nominated movie and it's about a boy who graduated from one of the Top universities in America. And then he suddenly decided to travel around, but somehow died in the wild. I don't know whether it's a based on a true story or not. I don't know exactly, but…

I think the movie is from 2007? I feel like it was kind of recent. But I think the true story happened decades ago. I think he wrote letters. I think that's partly where the story might come from.

It showed in the movie that his parents were also so concerned, especially his mother. And what you said about your mother reminded me of that movie.

I really need to see that. I think I would like it. I always like movies like Fight Club (《搏击俱乐部》), or Off the Air (《空军一号》). American Beauty (《美国丽人》), which I don't like as much. I don't know if you know these films. Or even like Horrible Bosses (《恶老板》) which is a comedy. You basically have these guys in America who are stuck at their job. They're kind of middle status. They break the cycle. They break out of it somehow. In a way, it may be ridiculous. The deeper issue is that what is heroism mean for people that are living in the 21st century? What does a hero look like? What does an outlaw look like? When the world is all conquered, where everything fits into neat little boxes. How do you break out of that? How do you find adventure in a world where satellites are mapping the entire terrain (地势) of the earth? I always love this theme of inventing new ways to struggle.

Maybe that was when you planted the seed of…

Kind of. I actually watched the movies late. I watched fight club when I was already…I think I had just graduated from high school, which is like a perfect time to watch it, really. It resonates (引起共鸣) with me. I'm sure anything or even like Captain Fantastic (《神奇队长》). I don't know if you know that. It's a family. They live in the woods and they home school. But they’re pro communist. It’s very strange.

So the media and the movies do have a big impact, a large impact, but unconsciously and gradually on kids, teenagers, or, of course in your case, you have graduated from high school. But it gradually planted a seed in your personality.

I think so. I got a job. I finished college. I got a job. I saved money. I got health insurance. I more or less did kind of normal things. It's not that weird to live abroad, although most people don’t. Just those things resonate with me, whether they cause my behavior, or I just like them. I don't really know. I think I’ve always like being an artist type.

I was watching a video recently where the guy said musicians, artists, writers, they get addicted to their feelings. They want things that feel good. And so for me that feeling—going to a new place where people are, that's a big element to it. I but I am also interested in this deeper question. Because I love stories, I love myths, I love heroes, all this kind of stuff. What does that mean? How do we get a piece of that?
