frosty刺骨的 寒冷的
acquaintance熟人
Yesterday was bright, calm, and frosty. I went to the Heights. I had a letter from Mrs. Dean to Mrs. Heathcliff. Mr. Heathcliff was not at home. I entered the house with Mr. Hareton Earnshaw Mrs.Heathcliff was there preparing some
vegetables. She ignored me .
I gave the woman the letter.
“It's a letter from your old acquaintance, the housekeeper at the Grange. ”I said.
Mr. Earnshaw tried to take the letter from her. but Mrs. Heathcliff pretended to cry. He threw the letter back at her. She read the letter, sighed, and stared. She didn’t seem to care lf we watched her.
“Mrs. Heathcliff, shouldn’t you answer the
letter?”
“Does Ellen like you?"
“Yes, very well. ”I replied "You must tell her that I would answer her letter, but I have no paper or pen . I don’t even have any books.”
“How can you live without books? ”
“was always reading, when I had them .”said Mrs. Heathcliff. "So Mr. Heathcliff destroyed all of my books. Hareton, I found the books in your room. Why do you have them? They are useless to you!”
Mr. Earnshaw blushed.
" Mr Earnshaw wants to study to be a scholar. ”I suggested.
“Yes, I hear him trying to spell and read to himself. It’s very funny to hear his mistakes
when we try something new.”
“He can try, but I hate to hear my favorite books read by his stupid mouth.”
Mr. Earnshaw left the room and then returned with the pile of books. He threw them on the floor in front of her.
“Take them! I never want to hear or read or think of them again!”
“I won't have them now.”she answered.
She picked up one book and mocked how badly he read.
He slapped her. Then he tossed the books into the fire. I don't think, he was actually happy to see them burn. She continued to mock him .
He left the room and Mr.Heathcliff entered.
Mr. Heathcliff gazed after him and sighed.
“Every time I look at his face, I do not see his father. He looks so much like Catherine. I’m glad to see you outdoors again, Mr. Rockwood.”he said. "Sit down and take your dinner with us. Cathy!Where are you?”
Mrs. Heathcliff came in with a tray of knives and forks.
“You may get your dinner with Joseph .”muttered Mr. Heathcliff. I ate silently with Mr.Earnshaw and Mr: Heathcliff. It was my last planned meal at Wuthering Heights I decided I would be leaving for London soon. It's too bad Mrs. Heathcliff and I did not fall in love.
