Over the next seven days, Edgar became very sick. Cathy cared only about taking care of her father. Cathy became full of sorrow. Edgar encouraged her to meet Linton so she would not be alone after his death.
I knew that Edgar thought that Linton
was exactly like him. He could not tell from
his letters that his character was not good. I also didn’t tell him because I didn’t want to upset him.
When we visited Linton, we found him in the same place we met him the last time. He seemed to have more energy than he did the last time. But he didn’t seem to feel joy. He felt fear.
“My father is very ill. ”she said. "Why did you call me away from him?"
“Cathy, don’t look so angry! I am a weak coward. If you want to hate someone, hate my father.”
“Nonsense! ”cried Cathy in a passion.
Linton seemed in great agony. He threw himself on the ground In terror.
“Cathy, I’m a traitor, too. But if you leave me, I shall be killed! Dear Cathy, my life is in your hands . Will you consent ? Wil you let me die with you?”
“Consent to what? ”she asked. “Tell me the truth! You wouldn't hurt me, would you?”
“But my father threatened me .”gasped the
boy.
“I’m not afraid!”
Linton began to kiss Cathy's hands . I looked up. I saw Heathcliff waving to me. He was ignoring the children and calling me to him.
“How are you? ”he said to me. " Is it true that Edgar is dying?”
“It is true.”
“How long will he last, do you think? " he asked.
“I don’t know .”I said.
“Because I’d thank his uncle to be quick and die before Linton! Get up, Linton!”
He tried to stand. but he couldn’t. Mr. Heathcliff came to him and lifted him onto his feet.
“Take my hand. ”said Heathcliff. "Stand on your feet. There now, she ‘ll lend you her arm. Miss Linton, walk home with him, will you? He shudders if I touch him.”
“Linton dear! ”whispered Cathy, "I can’t go to Wuthering Heights.”
Linton clung to his cousin in fear of his lather. I could not stop her from walking him into his house. She brought him to a chair .I followed.
Heathcliff shut and locked the door .I jumped.
“l am by myself. Hareton is gone, and Zillah and Joseph are off on a journey. Though I’m used to being alone, I’d rather have some interesting company, if I can get it. Miss Linton, sit down. Its funny bow much I hate things that fear me. If there were no laws, I would kill both of them .”
“I am not afraid of you! ”exclaimed Cathy.
“Give me that key!”
He looked up, surprised at her boldness,
She tried to grab the key, but he took it from
her .
“Now, Catherine Linton, stop it, or I shall knock you down.”
“We will go!” she repeated. She dug her nails into his hand. Then she bit him.
Heathcliff glared at me. He opened his hand. She took the key. He grabbed her and slapped her head twice.
“You villain! ” I began to cry and I ran at him. He punched me in the chest. I fell backward out of breath. Cathy held her head and leaned against the table to stand.
“Go to Linton now, as I told you. I shall be your father tomorrow. You’re no weakling. I will hit you again if you show me your temper!”
