By the end of the summer, Edgar finally let Cathy visit Linton again in his home. When we reached the Heights, we found Linton. He stood up to greet us. He looked pale and sickly.
Cathy looked at him with grief and astonishment. She asked him if he had become sicker.
“No!”he said out of breath and trembling. “I’m better .” There was something tired and wild in his large blue eyes.
“But you look worse!”
“I'm tired .”he interrupted hurriedly . “It is too hot for walking, let us rest here.”
Cathy sat down, and he sat beside her.
“This is something like your paradise .”said she. “Do you remember how we promised to spend two days in your paradise and two days in mine?”
Linton did not appear to remember. He did not seem to care about anything she said or did. Cathy realized, as well as l did, that he felt like it was a punishment to have to spend time with us. So Cathy said she was going to leave. Linton jumped up and begged her not to go.
“But I think you’d be more comfortable
at home than sitting here.”
“Stay to rest yourself .”he replied.“And Cathy, don’t think or say that I'm sick. Tell my uncle I'm healthy, will you?"
“I’ll tell him that you say so, Linton .”said
Cathy.
“And be here again next Thursday .”continued he. "If you meet my father, don't tell him that I was silent or bad company. It will make him angry.”
“I care nothing for his anger. ”exclaimed Cathy.
“But I do. ”said her cousin shaking.
“Does he treat you badly, Master Heathcliff? " I asked.
Linton looked at me but did not answer.
He began to moan in pain as Cathy began to look around at plants and berries.”
“Is it half-an-hour now ,Ellen? "she whispered in my ear at last.
“Well, we must not leave him asleep. ”I answered.
“Why did he wish to see me?”returned
Cathy.“It seems like he is only meeting me to stop his father from being angry. And though I’m glad he’s better in health. I’m sorry he’s so much less pleasant.”
“You think he is better in health, then? ”I asked.
“Yes. ”she answered. "He doesn’t whine about his pain as much as he used to .”
“There you differ with me, Miss Catherine.”I said. "I think he’s far worse .”
“I thought I heard my father.”
Linton gasped, and he woke up from his sleep.
“Are you truly stronger, Linton? Tell me the truth! ”Cathy said to him.
“Yes, yes, I am! ”he said and cried.
“For today we must part. ”she said .“1 am disappointed with our meeting, but I will not tell anyone.”
“Be quiet !He’s coming! ”Linton cried and grabbed her arm. Cathy pulled away.
“I’ll be here next Thursday. ”she cried "Goodbye!”
Before we reached home, Cathy told me that she pitied her cousin. She also seemed very confused about his health and his relationship with his father. We told Edgar what had happened, not knowing what to hide and what to reveal.
