Section A
Directions: In this section, you will hear two long conversations.
At the end of each conversation, you will hear some questions.
Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Conversation One
W: This food is terrible!
I can't even finish my dinner.
M: I know,
You think with all the money we paid for room and board,
the university could hire a better food service.
Where are you headed next?
W: I'm going over to the student recreation center to play some bridge.
M: You are spending your time on a card game?
W: Not just any card game.
It's one of the most strategic games.
M: So I have heard.
Don't you play with a partner?
W: Yeah! Four people play,
two against the other two.
M: So, you try to play in cooperation with your partner?
W: Actually, the cards of one of the four players are turned face up.
That player is called the dummy.
M: I wouldn't want to be called that.
When you are the dummy,
what do you do while the cards are being played?
W: Anything you want.
Sit there and study,
shuffle another deck,
get snacks for everyone...
I like to stand behind my partner and watch.
That is very interesting.
M: You know,
I've heard that bridge is habit-forming.
You should be careful not to play so much
that you don't get your studying done.
W: Don't worry about me.
I only play cards on Thursday after dinner,
and sometimes when they need a fourth player.
If you like, I could teach you.
M: Thanks, but I have a pretty heavy workload this semester.
I already spend my evenings doing things
I don't really know how to do yet.
W: I know you are busy,
but sometimes you need to have a rest.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
1. How does the woman plan to spend her evening?
2. What will the woman probably do if she is the dummy?
3. What does the man warn the woman not to do?
4. Why doesn't the man accept the woman's offer?
Conversation Two
W: Hello, Patrick, is that you?
M: Yeah Jane, what can I do for you?
W: I was calling about the apple tree
that you were trimming yesterday.
M: That was hard work!
W: I'm sure it was.
It sure looked difficult.
M: Yeah, I'm glad it's finished.
Hauling the branches to the front for garbage pickup was no fun either.
W: Well, I don't think you're quite finished yet.
Some of the larger branches fell over into my yard,
and I think you should come and get them.
M: Listen Jane, I don't see why I should do that.
You eat all the apples that fall in your yard
and you've never complained about that before.
W: Well, it's easier to pick up apples
than drag tree branches all the way to the curb.
My kids pick up the apples,
and the branches are just too big for them to drag.
M: Well, I guess you'll just have to do it yourself, Jane.
W: Patrick, I wish you would reconsider.
We've always gotten along fairly well,
but I think you're out of line here.
The branches are your responsibility.
M: Sorry, Jane, I disagree!
You take the benefits of the apple tree,
but refuse to deal with the bad side of it!
Besides, it won't take you any time
to get the branches out front!
W: Get the branches off my property,
or I'll have to sue you.
M: Yeah? For what?!
You're taking those law classes too seriously!
I gotta go. I have to pick up my son.
W: You'll be hearing from me.
M: Yeah, yeah. See you in court, Jane.
Questions 5 to 8 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
5. What did the man do yesterday?
6. What did the woman ask the man to do?
7. What did the woman threaten to do?
8. What was the man's reaction to the woman's threat?
Section B
Directions: In this section, you will hear two passages.
At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions.
Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
In the United States, many people once lived in large,
two-and-three-story homes.
Today, many people would like to live in such houses
but most people can't.
They don't have enough money to buy them
or even to make the first payment.
So, many people rent from month to month.
But some Americans really want to live in a house of their own.
So they build their own home.
They buy a house that is situated in an area
where houses are cheaper.
It is better to reside in a bad part of town, they think,
than not to live in a house at all.
Or they buy an old house and redesign it.
Then they decorate it with old style furniture.
Sometimes they can make an old house
look more beautiful than a new one.
Usually, it is not difficult for people to find an old home to buy.
Many older people decide that they don't need a big home
after their children leave.
So they sell their house and move into a comfortable apartment.
But when people move into a house,
they sometimes have problems.
Homeowners have to do their own maintenance.
For example, if the roof leaks,
one cannot ask the landlord to fix it.
On the other hand,
people can redesign their homes in any way they want
without having to be afraid of being thrown out by the landlord.
Questions 9 to 11 are based on the passage you have just heard.
9. Why don't many Americans live in large, two-and-three-story houses?
10. Why is it easy to find old houses for sale?
11. What problem will people have after they buy a house?
Passage Two
In a way, all of us are on a spaceship---the planet Earth.
We move around the sun at 18 miles per second and never stop.
On our spaceship,
we have 5 billion people
and limited supply of air, water and land.
These supplies have to be used carefully
because we can't buy new air,
water or land from anywhere else.
Environment on our planet is a closed system.
Nothing new is ever added.
Nature recycles its resources.
Water, for example,
evaporates and rises at visible drops to form clouds.
The same water returns to the earth as rain or snow.
The rain that falls today is actually the same water
that fell on the land 70 million years ago.
Today, the earth is in trouble.
Factories pour dirty water into rivers,
many fish die and water becomes unhealthy for people to drink.
Cars and factories put poisons into the air and cause plants,
animals and people to get sick.
People throw bottles and paper out of their car windows
and roadside becomes covered with all sorts of wastes.
Over the years people have changed environment
and we have pollution.
To continue to survive,
we must learn how to use the earth resources wisely.
We have to change our habits
and stop dropping such enormous amounts of industrial waste
into the water and air.
We must cooperate with nature and learn better ways to use,
not to abuse our environment.
Questions 12 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.
12. Why does the speaker compare the earth to a spaceship?
13. How fast does the planet Earth travel around the sun?
14. Why does the speaker advise us to use the earth resources wisely?
15. What message is the speaker trying to convey?
Section C
Directions: In this section, you will hear recordings of lectures or talks
followed by some questions.
The recordings will be played only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 16 to 19.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently surprised Chinese students
when he spoke to them in Chinese.
In a talk at Tsinghua University in Beijing,
Zuckerberg spoke Chinese for about 30 minutes.
Although his Mandarin was far from perfect,
students and faculty cheered his effort.
Zuckerberg's talk raises a larger question:
is Chinese the language of the future?
Could it replace English as the world's international language?
Mandarin Chinese already has the most native speakers of any language.
And, China may soon surpass the United States
as the world's largest economy.
The study of the Chinese language is increasing
in the United States and around the world.
This year, about 60,000 American college students
were studying Chinese.
That is three times as many as in twenty years ago.
A small but growing number of American parents
are even sending their children
to bilingual Chinese immersion schools.
They think knowing Chinese could give their children
a competitive advantage.
Clayton Dube,
the head of the U.S.-China Institute
at the University of Southern California,
thinks Chinese will grow in importance,
especially for people who want to work and do business in China.
But he does not think Chinese will overtake English any time soon.
"As China rises,
you can anticipate that more people will adopt the language.
But is Chinese going to replace English?
I don't think so---certainly not in my lifetime,
probably not in the next two, three, or four generations."
English rose to prominence through the British Empire
in the nineteenth century.
American dominance in the twentieth century
spread the language even further.
Dube says American pop culture
is one reason for English's popularity as a foreign language.
"American movies, music, television, video games
have wide audiences...
So far China's success in this realm has been very limited.
Chinese films, Chinese television shows,
and Chinese music don't have a huge following outside of China."
Chinese is also a more difficult language to learn.
The U.S. Foreign Service Institute estimates
it would take a native English speaker 2,200 hours
to reach professional fluency in Chinese.
That is four times longer than it would take
to reach the same level in Dutch, French, or Spanish.
While Chinese grammar is much simpler,
Chinese has a tone and writing system
that is more difficult for adult learners to master.
A recent survey by Gallup showed
that only one in four Americans is multilingual,
or able to speak more than one language.
And most multilingual Americans
are immigrants or the children of immigrants.
For most Americans, Britons, and Australians,
learning a foreign language is a choice, not a necessity.
China Daily estimates that 400 million Chinese are studying English.
That means China has more English learners
than the U.S. has English speakers.
16. In Mark Zuckerberg's talk at Tsinghua University,
what surprised the students?
17. Why are some American parents
sending their children to learn Chinese?
18. What increases English's popularity according to Clayton Dube?
19. What do most Americans,
Britons and Australians think of learning a foreign language?
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 20 to 22.
There is saying in American educational circles
that Harvard University is the crown of American universities
and the shining jewel in the crown is Harvard Business School.
Harvard Business School (HBS) is
one of the world's most prestigious business schools.
It is known as the West Point for businessmen,
executives, and managers.
One fifth of the top managers
in the top 500 companies in the United States are from HBS.
Every year, most new employees employed by McKinsey & Co.,
the big boss of the management consulting industry,
are HBS graduates.
The investment banks on Wall Street
are where HBS graduates go to report in crowds.
The MBA has become the symbol of power and wealth,
and is the degree that numerous people,
both in America and all over the world,
dream of or rather desire.
HBS is the founder of MBA and there is a legend about it.
The United States was an agricultural society
for the most part of the 19th century.
Many people, represented by President Thomas Jefferson,
were suspicious of industry and big business.
They believed that an agricultural society
in which people were hard-working, self-reliant, and honest,
was the best form of society for the United States,
while big business would weaken this American spirit.
Therefore,
when Harvard University proposed to found a business school,
there was a bitter quarrel over it.
Finally, Harvard University found an ingenious way.
In 1908,HBS was founded as a graduate school,
and did not enroll undergraduates.
Students must obtain a bachelor degree before applying for HBS.
In doing so, HBS is not only different from other business schools,
but stands at a higher level.
As a result,
HBS becomes the first graduate school in America
which can grant an MBA degree.
HBS is the cradle of the case method.
It started with 59 students.
Once it innovated the case method of research and teaching in 1925,
HBS enlarged the class size
which reached 500 students during the decade.
Now, all courses of HBS adhere to case method.
This method is being used at business schools throughout the world.
And nearly 80 percent of cases
used at business schools worldwide
are developed by HBS faculty.
The HBS cases range broadly.
They include almost all the cases that may occur in any company.
Therefore,
HBS graduates are already good at dealing with cases
before they step into the society.
20. Why is HBS regarded as the West Point for businessmen?
21. What can we learn about the founding of HBS in 1908?
22. Why are HBS graduates good at dealing with cases?
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 23 to 25.
Today let's talk about social networking.
First let's talk about networks.
Networks get things done.
Whether it's sending a letter or lighting your home.
Networks make it happen.
To get from Chicago to Santa Fe,
we need to see the network of roads that will get us there.
We see that Chicago is connected to St Louis,
which is connected to Dallas which is connected to Santa Fe.
Of course, people networks can help us with finding jobs,
meeting new friends, and finding partners.
You know how it works.
Bob is your friend,
he knows Sally,
and Sally's friend Joe has a job for you.
This is a network of people---a social network.
The problem with social networks in the real world
is that most of the connections between people are hidden.
Your network may have huge potential,
but it's only as valuable as the people
and connections that you can see.
This problem is being solved by a type of website
called a social networking site.
These websites help you see connections
that are hidden in the real world.
Here's how it works.
You sign up for a free account and fill out your profile.
Then, you look for people you know.
When you find someone, you click a button that says,
"Add as Friend".
Once you do this,
you and that person have a connection
on the website that others can see.
They are a member of your network,
and you are a member of theirs.
What's really cool is that you can see who your friends know,
and who your friends' friends know.
You're no longer a stranger,
so you can contact them more easily.
This solves a real world problem
because your network has hidden opportunities.
Social networking sites
make these connections between people visible.
Like a map for a highway,
they can show you the people network
that can help you get to your next destination,
whether it's a job, a new partner, or a great place to live.
Your network is suddenly more useful.
You can get started at these sites,
LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace.
23. What is the problem with social networks in the real world?
24. How can the social networking sites
solve the problem of social networks?
25. What is cool about the social networking websites?
This is the end of Listening Comprehension.
